Hi there, i've had this problem. I know that the nc38 crank i have sitting on my shelf is the 'wrong' one, but as the the right one is now in my engine i can't say with certainty that the it was the c38. As i recall the webs on the right one were the same size but the ones on the wrong one are different sizes, hope that makes sense.
Nick.

as far as i know, theres no right or wrong one, just one is easier to use than the other. one fits in plug and play and the other has slightly larger crank webs which need a little metal removing from the block to clear

the larger web crank dose not need the block clearancing (see my 2.8 thread) but it will foul the bottom of the pistons on all of the common easy build methods.
the solution to this is to have the weights "bobbed" which reduces there diameter (and mass but its not a problem, complicated math but trust me) this allows the crank to clear, any good engine shop will be able to do this or point you in the right direction.
p.s. being in malmesbury i assume your not far from me in ba12 land then.

id rather not go into the extra expense of machining the crank if i can get the C38 but if your offering .............................

ahh mine is being built into a spare engine, and i would advise looking for a small weight crank.
the small weight cranks come from the single vanos early m52b28 engines.
