Just thinking that there are a few 316i's around in good nick and quite cheap and that you can pick up a 352i touring for very little money too.

Is it possible to take everything off the touring and put it on the 316? Or is the touring different?

Just a thought...

Easy enough to convert the 316 to a 2.5 if you have all the required parts or a donor car.

It's a relatively straight forward swap.

You need the 6 pot engine, gearbox, propshaft, exhaust, engine wiring loom, ecu, header tank and rad.Ideally the diff too
You also need the plastic retaining clip that the header tank fits into(if using a facelift motor) and the bracket for the fuel pump and DME relays) and the 6 pot coding plug for the instrument cluster.

BadDave, I've just arranged to get hold of an M20 to do precisely this to my M42 touring.

So it definitely needs a different propshaft (the 260 box is longer than my 240?) even if I retain the small case for now? I.e the issue is at the gearbox end?

I may potentially have a donor car (relative getting shot of a 320 for an E46 sometime in the near future) - does anyone know whether it's essential to have one in practical terms, i.e. will it just be a massive PITA sourcing all the plumbing etc. for the M20?

What I'll be getting is the M20, 260 box, ECU, manifolds, AFM, fan (do I need it?), alternator, starter and plug leads. I have a list of the obvious big items prepared, but not sure whether there are 10,000 smaller ones that are going to make my life hell.

so it would just be striping both cars and then bolting the 2.5 in the 1.6 shell. wouldnt have to weld any thing?

Prop is different on the 325.
Get the fan and coolant hoses, header tank, and the bracket that the dme and fuel pump relays attach to.
Don't forget the oil cooler and fittings(inc the 2 plastic oil cooler brackets) and the plastic brackets that the rad sits on as M20 ones differ from the M40 ones.

The fuel pipes to the fuel rail and pressure reg will be too short, so you'll need to get a couple of metres of fuel hose too

Remove the M20 intact and leave all wiring/plug leads etc connected as it's means there's no faffing about trying to remember which wire goes where.
Same goes for the lump you in the car at the moment

Nothing at all

You can bolt on the dme/fuel pump relay bracket

Ta!

The M20 I'm getting is a B25 and already out of the car, worse luck. The potential "parts car" would be an H reg B20 engined car which will probably be scrapped otherwise. So at least I have one I can look at if I get confused! :)

Does all the suspension swap over?
Will the exhaust swap over?

If you have the right diameter struts on your recipient car (IIRC 325is and all tourings are 51mm), you should be able to use 325 springs and shocks at the front (subject to correction from those who've done it). Rear springs for cabrios or tourings don't work with coupe & saloon (and vice versa). Shock length should be near enough, but damping rates are another question. So if you want to build a 325i out of a clean 316i coupe shell and a 325 touring, you may find that the strut size is wrong at the front and springs are wrong at the back.

The exhaust is different, as you'd expect.

If you're putting a pre-cat engine in a later chassis (e.g. a 93 or 94 reg touring), either run it with a cat or make sure you have clear evidence of the engine's age (a convincing real or fake scrappies receipt should do it), otherwise you may well have MOT issues trying to get a non-cat engine (should be tested under the Basic Emissions Test) past the later emissions test.
