I have a 320i convertible that is almost perfect as far as I am concerned.

1989 pre-facelfit for classic looks.
Zinoberot repainted a couple of years ago.
New hood.
Manual.
No rust.
New shocks, bushings and rods.
15”a BBS

But...

I want more power in an official sort of way.

I have settled on fitting a 2.5l engine with the cam, ECU and manifold as was fitted in the Alpina Sports Pack upgrade.

I will probably end up using Alpina alternatives such as the BTB manifold.

The first challenge therefore is to find a decent 2.5 base engine. I will have the top off to fit the cam so will do a top end rebuild while I am at it.

Can anybody give me some places to look for a decent engine (and I will need a gearbox too). The newer the better.

Thanks for any ideas.

You're going to need deep pockets for this! A few years ago you could pick up a decent M20b25 for £250-£300, these days you're looking at three times that, if you can find one.

I'd speak to danthe for options and rough costs.

Thanks I have got in touch.

I do realise it won't be cheap and I also plan on fitting some Alpina Sports Pack upgrades (ECU, Cam and Manifold) so a top-end rebuild will be in the price too.

Keen to start with something well looked after though so keener on it coming from a car with lots of service history rather than low mileage.

I am guessing that I can take an engine and gearbox straight out of a Touring car... correct?

Quick question...

I take it there is no difference between a 325i Touring and a Convertible and that if I found a suitable Touring car I could transplant the engine, gearbox and suitable wiring / pumps etc straight in. Correct?
