Hi

I couple of weeks ago I had my first attempt at upgrading my 316i touring to an m20b25 engine. The engine came from a 1990 325i auto cab. I have fitted the m20 although I have come across a few issues and I need some advice.

1. I am using an m20b20 gearbox (Getrag 240 460 90) for the sportier ratios. I have fitted new clutch etc but I didn't get a gear linkage with the gearbox and the linkage that's already in the car is too long. Do i need to source the linkage from an m20b20 or are they the same for all 6 cylinders?

2. Radiator - I have sourced a non auto radiator and fitted with pipes etc although I am not quite sure how to mount the expansion tank. Currently the horn is where the expansion tank will sit so any advice on where the horn should go and how to mount the expansion tank would be very grateful. I am also missing the little screw that goes near the bottom of the radiator so if anyone has one, please send me a pm with posted price.

3. The engine I bought didn't come with the filter housing to connect the oil cooler and filter to the engine. If you have one for sale please pm me with posted price.

4.Throttle cable mount, I have managed to rip the m40 mounting for the throttle cable off however I did not have the the little plastic mount to connect the throttle cable, again if anyone has this available, please let me know.

I fly to South Africa next week so ideally I want to get the car up and running on Saturday, any help and support is appreciated.

Thanks
Corrie

1/ You need the M20B20 linkage.

2/ E30 horns are either a single one mounted off of the top rail in the middle, behind the kidney grill, or twin horns, fitted on the underside of the panels that the front bumper mounts fit in to, (behind foglamps, if fitted). The two types of horn set up use different main body looms, and the bodyshells are different.
Ideally you need the mount for the header tank chopped off of a six cylinder shell. Alternatively, retain your original radiator.

3/ Oil cooler is totally unnecessary on a M20B25 using modern oil, unless you intend to seriously track the car. Use a M20B20 filter fitting (just a double ended nipple fitting).

4/ Not sure which part you mean, but BMW probably have it (along with the oil filter mount.) Look it up in one of the online ETKs, and ask Cotswold BMW for a price.

So 2 months on and I just went for proper drive with the m20b25 in working order. More issues to be solved though,

1. Over fuels and runs rough when up to temperature, I'm presuming this is due to no lambda sensor being fitted and the connector being left open. What are my options to solve this? Do I need to drill a hole in exhaust for lambda sensor, can I get an chip that has had this blanked any other solutions?

2. I snapped a stud on the exhaust manifold, really dont want to drill it out etc. so what after market option are there that will still work with e46 clubsport rack? Will need to be a fair bit cheaper than BBTB (would love one but no way I can afford that right now)

3. My rev counter is now suggesting that the new m20b25 can rev to around 10,000 RPM. I need to change the coding plug in the instrument cluster to a 6 cylinder one, does anyone have one for sale?

4. There is a whine from gearbox/engine when using 2nd and 4th gears. Not done any research one this yet so any insight would be helpful.

Thanks! :)

1. M20B25 ECU defaults to a preset value when no lambda sensor is connected, so that's not your problem.
Did you check out the plug and socket that connects the injector loom to the engine loom under the inlet manifold before you fitted the engine?

2. If a stud is broken, you're going to have to remove the remains and fit a new stud, whatever manifold you use.
