I bought a 1993 320i cab last weekend from a fellow zoner, since driving the car around for the las fee days, iv realised its got a slight problem..

When the car is being driven it drives nice and smoothly as it should but when i stop at lights or somewhere and the engine is idleing at roughly 800rpm the whole car juders and the engine dosent feel smooth at all. U can feel the vibrations even tho there not that big in the drivers seat..

A smell of petrol has also been noticed on a few occasions, but no leaks spoted..

If touch the accelorator to bring revs up to roughly 1000rpm the engine becomes smooth again..

I have unpluged the afm to see the repnose, if i diconect the plug while the engine is running it dips revs for a second and then goes back to reving normally but still a rough idle

Also the engine sounds a bit tappty compared to my other e30s should this be a problem?

Sorry to go on and on.,
But if any body can suggest things to check to resolve this matter that would be helpfull..

Its really anoying and is taking the enjoyment away from driving my e30 now..

Thanks saj

You probably have an air leak but most of the issues that can cause this are either documented in the wiki or will come up on a search for bad idle/rough idle.
They give far more detail than i can give here.

If you have checked the usual suspects ~(blue temp sensor, afm resistances, cleaned the temp sensor at the front of the afm, checked the injector loom plug and cleaned the tps) then i would expect you will find an air leak from either the injector gromets, the intake manifold gasket, the breather pipe or the metal breather pipe.
