heya, was just looking into chipping my m20 2.7 and i just read that the chip will allow a higher rev limit allowing me to gain 15bhp. i thought a chip would give more power through the whole rev range. does it only make a diff if im using the extra rpm? or does it work through the whole rev range?

I have a 2.7i motor and increasing the rev limit on mine would not give me any extra power as mine peaks at around 5300 rpm. Increasing the rev limit will only make power if you can draw the air in. That will require cam changes, exhaust system changes..............

Also fitting a generic chip may make your engine over fuel, pink e.t.c as you do not know what spec it has been mapped for and what assumption the tuner made.

I had one of Ants generic chips and he knew the spec of the engine and it still overfueled at WOT, 11.5 AFR after 4800 rpm! I had to take it back (after over 1 year of running that chip) and he did a road mapping session as I am too cheap to get it mapped on a rolling road. It runs much better now and I am quite happy with it. I have not had it on the rollers in the current spec but is quicker from 30-70.

So if the tunner is claiming a power gain what are they claiming it against? Unless you know what your engine is doing power/torque vrs rpm and what the fueling is like how do you know you will benefit from a remap.

Get it mapped properly or don't bother doing anything.

oki, sounds good advice. i didnt think that just throwin a chip at it would instantly give power gain without the proper mapping.. think ill just avoid the chip :roll:

couldnt have said it better myself.. a generic (so to speak) chip is one thing on a near standard M20 but strokers have so many variables its not nearly as easy for a tuner to knock up a suitable tune that will give good gains. not saying u wouldnt see gains above standard but there is more potential with a live/custom tune.
