True, do you think the fridge with ice and ice packs will be as efficient as a cool box then? God i'm getting all anal about this.Ziggy wrote:Blimmin 'eck - I was worried then! Can't see the need for a cool box too really, unless you need to fill both?!

If its a proper fridge they are designed to act like big cool boxes when off, so that when on the don't consume more eleccy than the need and basically incase of emergencies.

Yeah I reckon... & it'll easily be good enough to keep cold for the journey down there.Jon_Bmw wrote: True, do you think the fridge with ice and ice packs will be as efficient as a cool box then? God i'm getting all anal about this.
I HATE PACKING. I HATE THINKING ABOUT PACKING. I HATE HAVING TO FIX MY CAR BEFORE I CAN START PACKING!!

I suppose i was being stupid as i know they act in duty cycles so that should really have answered my question. Cool box is out! I might even make it under 2 tonne at this rate.
I'm taking tools, in fact I'm just going to empty the garage into my boot!
I'll have a good set of jump leads, starter pack, trolley jack and stands, looooaaaads of hand tools, spares, wire & connectors, tape, oil etc.!
Just got to re-fit my crank pulley, alternator belt, radiator and bleed the cooling system when I get home tonight.
Yeeeeaaah, I'm ready!
Martin.

Im not really taking much in the way of tools, just bits a pieces. Original tool roll, fuses, bulbs, jump leads, warning triange, 2 fire extinguishers, AA European beakdown cover and crossed fingers.
Last time I went in 1999 I went with the TVR club in my 1988 S1 and had no problems and only one out of 30 cars back on a trailer due to electrical problems.
Cooling wise I have a bigish cold box that im putting a couple of lumps of ice in. Ice cream tubs are good for making blocks and should last at least a couple of days. You can buy ice at the local supermarkets. Also taking a small cool bag with a block of ice and some beers as I want a cold one when I arrive and will probably stock up on beers on Friday

Iv got jump leads but im not bringing my jack, way to much weight! will have to make do with the bmw POS lol.Ziggy wrote:Oh, & I've got a tow rope, & loads of other tools etc, but no jump-leads. Anyone got some? I'd also rather not have to take my trolley jack if someone else has got anything better than the factory POS?!
As for chancing it, yes i am! No breakdown cover here! I really shouldn't have said that on a public forum im obviously going to brake down now!
Given mine a once over today and everythings looks ok, just need to top up the oil and water. Not risked going without breakdown cover as i haven't got any spares but hope i don't need to use it.
Think we have everything else about ready, just going to stop off on the way at tesco to stock up on food and drink, relying on getting most stuff out there.

im stocking up on weetabix and milk tomorrow thats all a man needs! Im pretty much packed now, mate has found some neat fold-away stoves and camping gear at his old mans place, all are welcome to use!
Kedge, you are going in a 318-is right? Should be no problems mate; just been topping my fluids up etc today and sorting out some annoying niggles and that. Good to have another four pot friend to take some of the stick!

Taing it steady so i can't see there being any real miss-haps, just got to take my annoying dust cover off the center bearing as i don't think i can cope with that all the way down the motorway!

Haha. Had a rattle coming from my HT lead heatshield today, sorted that out but its still a ridiculous motorway car with the silly diff i have got on it! I might be on ITB's but its not looking likely unless i pull off a miracle tomorrow.

No laptop but I have knocked the quality on my digital camera down to normal (rather than high) which gives me 250 pictures. Not great quality but ok for posting on the forum when I get back which is all I really need.Dan318-is wrote: Any of you boys bringing a laptop? A few people are taking generators if you need to charge batteries, mine eats 4 AA's on a regular basis. Crap camera basically

I have printed off some directions and maps regarding the local supermarkets. Basically the way I understand it from the regulars if you don't have it you can buy it there.Kedge wrote: Think we have everything else about ready, just going to stop off on the way at tesco to stock up on food and drink, relying on getting most stuff out there.

All you guys needn't worry, 4 pot and 6pot, you all have the wrong amount of cylinders anyway. 5 is where it is at.
As if. The engine is about to go bang I am sure. Just wasted a tub of fully synthetic no doubt.
I'm hoping to whip a couple of bacon rolls up together at dover, all being well anyway. Mmmmm bacon.
Dan, ITB's - What thread have i missed!!! and as for no breakdown cover

Awesome Martin good job on fixing it. I have left my problems, not very wise but had a much more relaxing day
Here is where I am at, at the moment:

As for the headlights, mine has something to change the beam pattern so I may do that, I may also forget officer. We won't be travelling when it is dark over there anyway.

there you go assuming the french plod speaks french chav!
french police are notoriously anal, stuck up little hitler wanna be's who are all given automatic weapons on the off chance the germans get funny again and start hoping across the borders in more than pairs. But they don't want to admit even that boat has sunk and even germany left crippled economically and socially by the war has recovered better then france, bitter twisted evil little beggers. Thats what mimes, silly black and white stripped clothes and cheese does to you.
better take some Euros for those 'special' on the spot fines, and I just remembered why I'm not coming.

Regarding headlamps, i was thinking about this today; we are not actaully going to be driving in france in the dark are we? So why bother?
edit just realised that jon has pointed out we wont be in the dark!
Paul, thanks for the heads up, im on rechargables too for my camera!
Roll on clacket!
Good luck on the ITBs Dan, be cool if you get that sorted, nearly bought some a while ago for mine.

Weather won't matter - sun's clearly preferable, but it's going to be awesome either way.
Top tip for rain in summer - waterproof top, shorts that dry quickly & reefs (/other brands of sandles are available). Lets face it - we're all going to be too trolleyed to notice...
On another note, I'm disgusted with myself - just bottled it & wasted £60 on AA cover.
