NE Rolling Road Day
Moderator: martauto
As mentioned at this month's meeting, Ian Addison has arranged a rolling road day at Vsport, who are located at Boldon, So.Tyneside.
The date has been settled as Sunday 19/08/07, but that is provided that at least ten cars are pre-booked. If there are less that ten, the date will be brought forward one day, which brings the advantage of each day getting more runs. The price will be reflected on the number of cars attending.
Vsport also deal in stainless steel exhaust systems, engine, throttle body, suspension and brake conversions, ECU remapping, fault diagnostics etc. etc. and also offer a fitting service for any parts they supply.
Could those who wish to come let me know by the end of the month and once the numbers are settled, Ian will talk to Vsport to finalise prices.
Thanks,
Mick

will it be ok to invite a non BMW along Mick?
Not sure yet Chris. Vsport have restricted us to a max of 20 cars, and Jamie was on about asking some Jap cars along to make up the numbers if we were short, so I suppose non-BMWs would go in with those....
Apparently the rollers need setting up for either RWD or FWD. Vsport would prefer not to change it all around on the day.
What were you thinking of bringing?

might get my brother along with the race car (VW Beetle) so it would be RWD too, its fitted with a spool (solid differential) but i don't suppose that would make any difference

id quite like to get in on this to see whats what with my car. might have a btb on by then too. be nice to get a before power figure so when the 2.8 gets built ill have something to compare it to.
No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.
There won't be anything definite on the prices and what you get for it until there's a clearer picture of how many are coming. Vsport are basing the day on £30 per car, could be cheaper depending on the number of cars that turn up.

One of the guys in our club (Ian) found out about this place, took his E36 M3 and was chuffed to bits with everything, so he got onto them about arranging this day. Ian hasn't internet access, so I'm trying to answer the questions by texting him.
Never been to one of these days in my life, so not sure what to expect. Last text from Ian said £30 for a power run or £40 for a full run, which is 4 power runs and some tuning if reqd.
I'll go and see the firm at the end of the month to get definite prices and see what we get for the money. At the minute, I'm looking for who's interested.
This is also on other forums and there's loads of interest at present.
Cheers,
Mick

i hope so!
me and him are trying to find time. we have stripped the 535i and the engine is out
happy about that .... can you tell?
and now its just when can we put it in
my exhaust on the 318 is going to fall off VERY soon so i hope we can start this week or next, i hope.
how is the 2.7 going will that be ready?

if the sun is shining i will the engine will be going in soon! oh god i am excited!
now the questions about rolling roads begin.
so does diff ratios effect the readings?
i will be running the super short 4:1 dif for a few weeks which is a pain but i dont care.
i want a better longer dif in so i can read the power curve for optimum gear change and i bet the short dif wont help.
but will it effect the power reading - guess it shouldnt.
sorry for the double post

A rolling road measures torque at the wheels. By measuring transmission drag they can estimate torque at the flywheel. Torque is the only real measure of power. "BHP" is a notional figure, the product of torque x revs, ie. the higher a given engine size revs the more power it can produce. That's why fitting a wilder cam produces more power (bhp) but moves the torque peak up the rev range. Since the torque is known & the rpm is known you can calculate the all-important BHP figure.
The best description I've heard is, "Torque is how hard your engine can punch (acceleration), power (bhp) is how fast your engine can punch (top speed)".
In your case, the 535 has 211bhp which is a lower figure than for the same engine in the 6 or 7-series (220bhp). This was probably to prevent the 5 being faster than the two flagships!
Good news is that the '87 on M30's were set up very weak in readiness for cat converters. A re-chip apparently works wonders for mid range drivability (an auto 6 feels like it's in Sport mode) & gives a claimed 11 - 20bhp. I'd take the upper figure with a pinch of salt but for £150 it sounds like it could be good value. I say "could" because you'd probably not notice 11bhp but the drivability is the main gain.

ever the man of wisdom thanks and that was agood explanation.
does the 6 and 7 have cats? i would guess so but if they dont that could be a good reason for the power figure difference?
well my e30 m30 wont have no cats and i ahve 1 chip ready to fit and another to ne mapped for the m30 which i will use is still debatable and Andy Gall wants one of them.
update for those interested my plans with andy means we start the conversion monday the 23rd of july.
wish us luck

Not as standard though fitting a cat to the 635 did drop it to 211bhp IIRC. Remember, cats weren't compulsory until '93.ric325i wrote: does the 6 and 7 have cats? i would guess so but if they dont that could be a good reason for the power figure difference?
I believe the exhaust manifold was the main culprit for the 5's lost power. Pre Highline 6's had a pretty crap exhaust manifold which owners love to ditch for a tubular affair. Highlines had a more efficient job (& bigger valves/inlet manifold too) so you could look at these. I assume the 7 was the same since contempory articles stated the 6 was given the 7's motor rather than the 5's.
nice one DaveD, very anul.
still thanks for the info /\ was a joke btw.
i would love a tubular manifold but they dont fit the e30 without some mega work
in time we will see.
de-cat so should be 220 straight off
i have a chip and want to check it on the rollers so i will be up for this as soon as the engine is done, though i will run the engine in a bit as its not been running for some time

cool, be nice to see it again and see how the graph compares to last time.
we got a great big convoy trucking through the night
we got a great big convoy what a beutiful sight
convoy..........
