I just wondered what the best way to remove underseal is?

Get the car dipped/sand blasted??

Hot air gun, the type for stripping gloss paint, a good stiff scraper, and a harris style scraper which has a few different profiles for getting in to arkward corners.

Are you sure you want to do this? it is a terrible job, i've done it once myself, that is enough.

the problem is working under the car, for hours, you will be bombarded by boiling hot sticky tar like stuff, falling in your ears, up your sleeves in your hair ect. it would of course be better if the car was tilted on it side, so it could be worked on in comfort, but this is easier said than done!!

chassis roller anyone?

hi mate I started with a blow torch which is very messy and I didnt fancy burning underseal falling on me under the car. didn't now if there was a chemical out their that was good for the job?

the kind of chemicals that would remove underseal are pretty nasty, nitromors and the likes. Its still bad just in a different way.

When I did it i found that i didnt need to get it actualy burning just hot. I know this will sound stupid but i think its easier to do in the summer on a hot day! the sealer is softer and easier to scrape, i'm not sugesting you wait till then, but if you can

the bottom line is that there is no easy way to do this, unless you go with what JimmyC said, which is a great idea if the car is stripped, but i suspect its not? But its well expensive. I've just picked up an engine block i had chemicaly stripped at a place in Dudly called Surface Processing Ltd 01384 242010, they do body shells, at the time they had Rowan Atkinson's Ford Falcon in for a full bare metal strip and E-coat (zinc based coating used on modern euro boxes) But they are booked up till august

I have read somewhere that the underseal on these cars contains asbestos, that can release dangerous fibres if burned or ground off. I will try to find some confirmation of this, but in the meantime be careful!!

hi mate thanks for the advice. I am not trying to burn off the underseal,Im just heating it up to remove it,but once you have scraped a bit off ...any little bits hanging off catch fire.

I will try a heat gun and make sure I wear my mask.
