Spare wheel well
Moderator: martauto
it depends on what else you have done is the car stripped out [ no roof lining etc]
Its fully stripped out, no heater, single skin sunroof, polycarbonate windows etc
got any pics matey
why not leave the sapre wheel well alone remove the TWO dirty great big heavy fuel tanks and do what i am doing and fit a fuel cell IN the sapre wheel well
thus saving the wait of the two massive standard tanks

well you have two options both i think are 40-45 litres
i think you could either
- cut the spare wheel well out and then fit an all sheet over that and fit the fuel cell as close to the rear divide (and the furthur forward the better as the normal tanks fit over the axel)
- or as i say fit a fuel cell into the spare wheel well
hth

what colour ya goiing for mateyThe car is being sprayed at the moment

the capacity is approx 45litres, so similar to the oem one. it uses the oem level sender and can have an aero filler cap, or can use the standard filler.

I would say leave the tank where it is. A 45l tank in the boot is going to seriously alter the balance of the car, being the wrong side of the axle and raising the centre of gravity !
It may be different with a smaller tank, maybe behind the passenger seat ?

we cut out the wheel well to replace with a carbon fibre sheet... but once out it hardly weighed anything
so prob not worth the bother

White 318iS, 2.7 conversion, LSD, H&R cup kit, ARBs, F&R strut braces, full cage, kevlar buckets, wilwood 4 pot brakes, braided hoses, 6pt harnesses, f/glass bonnet, Toyo 888's, scorpion, polybushed, carbon cards and boot lid.
fitted it with a dozen bolts.. sealed with silicon.agreen wrote:Two question how was it fixed to the floor ?we cut out the wheel well to replace with a carbon fibre sheet...
did you underseal the bottom of it dude
not gonna do it just wondered

I would disagre the static wieght distribution of an e30 (ie corner weights with no springs) is biased towards the front with the majority of the wiegth reduction at the front this will get worse.12345kevin wrote:I would say leave the tank where it is. Putting the fuel cell in the boot is a good idea, the DTM cars done it & most US autocross guys put in the spare wheel on a striped car to improve the handling.
Also i would put the washer bottle in the boot, and run with plexi glass and grp doors

Black.what colour ya goiing for matey
Not going to save alot of weight if it holds about the same as the org tank ?the capacity is approx 45litres, so similar to the oem one.
This is what I was thinking, the e30 tank is nice and low down.I would say leave the tank where it is. A 45l tank in the boot is going to seriously alter the balance of the car, being the wrong side of the axle and raising the centre of gravity !
its just as low if its in the sapre wheel wellQuote:

its made from really light ally and there is only one as a pose to the two that are on an e30 , i have felt the tanks they are very very v ery light and look brilliant
Thanks for the link.
I was thinking the tank would be round to fit in the well.
I have a custom made 45litre tank in the boot right back as far as it will go and makes no negative effects on the car whatsoever so go for it.
Wouldnt bother cutting out the wheel well but just bin the spare wheel, for weight, and carry a bottle of tyre weld should you get a flat.

heres a pic of the tank. i can make the tanks to what ever capicity people require, so if people do endurance they can have a larger capicity, or smaller, say 35litres if they mainly do track days. heres a pic.

Slightly off topic, but I feel the need to share my thoughts about weight distribution.
Obviously, the ideal is 50 - 50, can't argue with that. Generally the E30 seems to be in the region of high fifties - low forties front -rear. THIS WILL DO. Certainly dont be adding weight intentionally at the back of the car. In simple terms (the only ones I understand) as well as weight distribution, you've got to think about polar moment of inertia. In other words that big weight at the back will want to go straight on when you turn the car, prompting mid corner / exit oversteer, something that the E30 is not short of already.
If you've got initial understeer which you probably have) screw on some negative camber on the front and even play with the tracking (circuit use only!) to promote good turn in. Once you're in the corner, the chassis dynamics will take over, along with your right foot and it will be oversteer all the way to the corner exit.
By the way, those fuel tanks look superb and I would fit one in the wheel well, despite what I said above. As long as you dont run it full on track. Weight is your enemy, not necessarily weight distribution.
Waiting for howls of derision.
Kim.
