I am building a road rally car and i am in the process of removing the sunroof, what do you guys usually do with the sunroof?

I have noticed it is very heavy!

What do you think of making a fibreglass mould from the original one then glueing that in??

I am pretty sure i can do it very easily......

Remove the whole thing, sunroof cartridge, mech and carrier (almost size and shape of the roof panel itself).

Then you've got a few options;
* You could remove the roof skin completely and buy a non-sunroof skin from BMW (about £220). Thats the option ive gone for. BUT it is a serious PITA, time consuming and something you'll get half way through and think, why the fuck did i start this.

* You could keep the actual metal panel and weld some brackets to hold that in. Then seal up around the edges inside and out.

* or could make some sort of fiberglass panel, but metal sheet would probably be more adequate. You could simply apply sealer underneath, then pop rivet it to the roof panel (obviously overlapping the sunroof hole.)

Depends how much time & budget you have or whether you care what it looks like or if you just want it functional.

Cheers :D

I am going to use a bit of POLYCARBONATE and seal that into the hole.

all the road rally boys in north wales just seem to rivet a sheet of ali over the hole left by the sunroof. looks a bit heath robinson but does the job.
i'm going with the solution that Lloydie38 has, no point re skinning a roof on a road rally car as it won't last long if you're trying :D
