Road Rally car with 4x4

Hiya,

To fill my spare time for the rest of this summer and the coming winter, I am planning to build a E30 road rally car for next season. Now the common choice is to "modify" a 318is and I might end up doing that, however I am tempted to go for something more exotic....

Now on the continent you get the 325iX, which has 4 wheel drive, however its not eligible for road rallying due to the 4 cylinder restriction. However how possible is it to combine the four wheel drive system with one of the 4 cylinder engines??

My research so far has shown that it is not directly possible to connect the 325iX gearbox with the M42 engine. And more problems arise due to the engine placement differences between the 4 and 6 cylinder models. And a special sump would have to be manufactured in order to accommodate the front differential. However I am not giving up that easily...

Now the next possibility would be to combine the central differential, which splits the drive between front and back with a conventional 4 cylinder gearbox. Does anyone know if thats possible or if anyone has done that before?

i'm pretty sure this wouldn't meet with road rally regs mate as it's not a standard production car setup. and 4x4 is being banned on 2009? i can't remember the exact year but it's only a few years. not just trying to put a downer on the situation but i don't think an is engine even with some mods is suited to a 4 wheel drive train as it's not torquey enough and would be a bit flat. likee the idea of doing a project though just a pity that i don't think it would be the best combination. but if you want to do it then go for it it'd certainly be nice to see.
