Where to buy a cage?
Moderator: martauto
I am on the look out for a cage for a 325.
It needs to be multi point preferrably with the strengthening cross in the back rather than a diagonal bar. I dont mind too much if its bolt or weld in as it will be fully welded in the end anyway. I prefer the ones which require you to cut a hole into the dash to get them to the ground but will accept the dog leg style if I have to.
I dont mind unprepared ends, I can get that sorted.
Where would you buy such a cage?
I dont have a bottomless money pit I would suggest Ԛ£500 including the dreaded VAT

Ԛ£554 for a Custom Cages profiled, welding cage made from CDS
Really is the best you can get in cages but requires a lot of fitting, which has to be A1 for strength
You can order direct from them, they also do un profiled for less Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£

You are going to struggle with Ԛ£500...OMP do a good multipoint but not the easiest to fit as goes through bulkhead front and rear and on ebay cheapest price is approx Ԛ£800...I may be able to get for a bit less
Other option is the 6 point bolt in but Safety Devices cage is still more than Ԛ£500 but again OMP do a cheaper bolt in that I could get you for less than your budget....or get a custom cage made for you...but will need to be good with your welder...pm me and can give you full details
The supplying dealer for SafetyDevices E30 cages is Automac...they are in Hertfordshire...also supply OMP, Sparco and custom cages...a discount may be available if car club member, or competing in a challenge etc
PM your number and can give you a call etc

I dont need profiled, the guy building the car for me is a genius and is happy without. We also prefer the dash cut out version, rather than bent leg, but will take what we can, within reason.JimmyC wrote:Ԛ£554 for a Custom Cages profiled, welding cage made from CDS

Anyone have any links to web-sites? I have seen them in Demon Thieves but can you buy direct?
Thanks for your help.

Yep I ordered mine direct
You need to cut the dash, it runs to front and rear turrects and has a massive amount of extra bars compared to the ther cages mentioned.
They also do a T45 version if you want to go light weight but its alot more money
Whats the car for? Series etc? Who's building it for you??
JimmyC.......... I currently leave a car at the Nurburgring year on year. Its a prepared 205gti...............The time has come to do the same thing with a 325i. I bought the car cheaply and my good friend who is a car prepairer is doing most of the work for me. The car may be used in the GLP, or CHC series in the future although thats an aspiration, for the moment it will be tourist laps only.
Obviously I will be picking you guys brains as I know next to nothing about E30's ..........however we have been chatting to the race car boys at the ring.
The spec is looking like ......
standard 325i engine (to start with)
Multipoint welded in cage
H&R coilovers
H&R anti roll bars
Cobra Monaco's - for no reason other than they are cheap
Harnesses
Not sure what to do on the brakes, havent decided yet.
thats the starting point anyway........

If your guys good with a welder and good value then custom cages is a good way to go...as stated before Automac do also supply Custom Cages as do Tweeks and other suppliers, but some will offer discounts
The OMP 6 point is a value cage if on a budget all depends what other people are looking for...depends what usage is and how you value your life

If its any help, i bought an OMP 6 point bolt in jobby direct from Demon Tweeks. They had 1 in stock on the shelf and i had it next day.
Its got the diagonal rear bar and also door bars. (not sure if you'd have to cut the dash)
Including the vat and delivery it was #405 quid.
Bought it over a year ago and still havent put it in yet. Just painted it up. lol.

Im looking for something more comprehensive than that E30_tracker .......... forgive me for saying but Ԛ£405 seems alot of money for thos few bits of metal almost Ԛ£100 per length
This is more what im looking for although I might have to extend my budget slightly its Ԛ£410 +VAT and Ԛ£35 delivery ......... might be worth a haggle though

yes completely agree northloop.
Thats why i havent used it yet. As im waiting for some funds to get a bit more of an uber cage once ive got the engine and running gear finished.
But 520 quid for that cage you've shown is a good price.
and 850 for a T45. Nice.

No need for strut braces or anything as the cage makes the car so stiff and welds to front and rear struts
I'll bang some pics up if I can find some

Haven't got any of the front but its got a bar behind the dash left to right, and above the winscreen.
With trangulation through to the front struts
It is a serious bit of kit and stiffens the car massively more than a SD, Sparco etc

I did notice the cross bar at the front, and thought it was a good idea.
I have a safety devices 6 point cage in my 205 and to be honest I think in the case of a 'big one' it would fold like a pack of cards. Hence the cage in the beemer needs to be fit for purpose, not just show.
If you get the chance to take any more pictures of the set up I would be very interested in seeing them. What does your car get used for?

This year its mainly been used to blow up
engine rebuild number 4 at the moment
It was meant to be running in the Production BMW Championship but my luck has sucked this year!! Roll on the 2007 season!
I'll try and grab some shots of one of the other cars tonight which has a modified CC cage in it, extra bars to the rear axle mounts and diff mounting points and extra safety bars to the corner of the footwell (to stop a wheel folding in if the worst happens).

Mine is a 4 door so we already have to make a couple of small mods, but with 16 bracing points we wont alter the intregrity of the cage.
We will also be welding plates to attach from the uprights to the pillars. Again just added strength.
I watched a couple of the PBMW videos and thought it looked like fun
If you get bored this is what I do with my cars http://www.northloop.co.uk/videos_pug.htm
