Tyres for silverstone

Going on a track day @ Silverstone on the 13th in the touring.

So far I have H&R Cup Kit suspension, poly bushes (subframe and eccentric control arm)

All I need is some rear tyres and cant choose which ones.

Running 15" BBS's.

What do you guys use?

Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2?

Goodyear Eagle NCT5?

Goodyear Eagle Venutra?

Dunlop Sport Sp01?

Dunlop Sport Sp 9000?

I have absolutely no idea here so your help would be most appreciated.

id get good part worns, any good brand will do. i always use falens, karan uses toyos, simon13 eagle f1's and we all swear by them!!

Getting hold of those part worns aint easy where I am.

Toyo's Proxes and Falken ZE512's are only Ԛ£50 each so might go with those.

Karan's car grips bloody well so I think he might have the right tyre choice.

Got a link to this trackday, I would like to go too! Might not be able be able to get the day off though.

If you have a few quid spare, you could try some Colway Intermediates, I've got them on the Civic. They are ok in the wet, and in dry/damp they are very good.

I have Toyo's on my 3.6 m5 and they are very grippy.

Andrew is looking into some Eagle F1's for me - these are the preffered choice.

I will get Toyo's if I cant afford the F1's. Better get them on and bed them in quickly!

PBMW are using Toyo R888's this year as a control tyre, testing gave some very positive feedback

Can give you some first hand feedback after cadwell next week

Sal the Proxes are good, I just think the treads a bit too 'deep' when new. Part worn toyo's would be a good compromise.

Demlot has recommended getting 205/50's as have Bexleys. Very good recommendation.

Unfortunately Eagle F1's dont come in that size so its Toyo's for me. Nice and cheap aswell.

I will just have to drive alot over the weekend to bed them in!

The proxes come in some different tread types apparently - can anyone shine any light on this.

Falken ZE512's - these are on the Alpina C2 and they grip bloody well so its between these and and Toyo Proxes T1-R's

I can get the Falkens for Ԛ£235 fitted.

Toyo's are Ԛ£272

If anyone has anything bad to say about the Falken's please say it now because they seem to be cheap and perform well on a car that I already have been in quite a few times.

Hi Sal,

Thought i better tell you what i have found running my E30 at Silverstone over the last few months. I always do the GP circuit and do approx 4 hours on track.

Any 'road' tyre will take a hammering on a circuit, the tread (especially a new tyre) will heat up and be a little squirmy, it will even collect rubber from the surface for you to peel off after!!

You will also find that the side walls are soft and will increase roll considerably. I switched to Colway F2's and noticed a huge difference from normal road tyres, unfortunately they are no good on the road so the Dunlop SP Sport Race might be worth considering.

So, who is running this track day then?

I went for Bridgestone Sp03's - got them for Ԛ£100 all round - they have had 200 miles on them so nice bargain there!

What tyres you use should be determined by the suspension setup also.

My car uses Kumho and with the suspension settings I use it handles very well. I have been advised by a racing driver that because my car is so well balanced do not change anything even though some people think the tyres are cr*p.

My advice - if you want grip then road tyres are just no good but track tyres will alter the characteristics of your car - so you will need to be aware of under/oversteer etc.

Even the choice of soft/medium/hard can determine if you like the setup.

The Dunlop SP Sport Race is a good choice also but the best setup is to have a setof road for the road and track for the track.

yes the tread on t1 r is deep to start with so they need to run in well and slowly i found

Your not the only one said that! You'll have to forgive me, I know very little about tyres but I think I'm about to find out very soon!

my car came with some very well used kuhmo v70A on it and i used them on two track days. on the latter one i found they were crap as they did not heat up quick enough (to be fair the track day started 1.5hrs late due to them having to defrost the track !!! -it was bloody freezin' ). I think the tyres had "work hardened" ie gone through the heat-cool cycle too many times and the rubber simply would not get sticky. I have put some used michelin pilot cup sports on the rear and some newer (but still used) kuhmo v700 on there now. i am off to silverstone on friday so will let you know how they perform. my supplier tells me that the problem is i still have the harder compound tyres as this is all they can get hold off (they are control tyres from various racing series so there is no choice of compound). they can get me softer ones but only new and at Ԛ£90 a tyre they are a bit steep (i paid Ԛ£15-Ԛ£20 per tyre for the used ones !!!)
