Hi Gents,

Ive been busy this summer working on adding ABS to my track car. After some research and careful consideration I have decided to install the ATE MK60 DSC/ABS system from the late E46 models.

Below is a basic overview of the system components.

Image

The system is fully programable and stand alone, which will bring a host of technological advancements over what is currently available for our cars. The nearest unit that comes close is the Bosch Motorsport ABS system. The additional advantage is the MK60 will output a speed signal to S54 and with a steering angle sensor you will have full DSC and ASC+T (traction control, a must with 340hp!!!).

Some more information about the MK60 DSC

The hydraulic unit consists of the following:

Ӣ Four inlet solenoids
Ӣ Four outlet solenoids
Ӣ Two changeover solenoids
Ӣ Two charge solenoids

It is designed to maintain the vehicles stability during:

Ӣ ABS braking regulation
Ӣ ASC+T traction control
Ӣ DSC for oversteer and understeer control (can be switched off and only ABS will be in operation).

Additional features are also programmed into the control module.

These features are:

Ӣ CBC - Corner Brake Control
Ӣ EBV - Electronic Brake Proportioning
Ӣ MSR - Engine Drag Torque Regulation
Ӣ ADB - Automatic Differential Brake
Ӣ DBS - Dynamic Brake System

I would like to propose to all those that are interested in a ”˜kit’ which will enable you to fit the Mk60 unit to any E30 with 4 or 5 stud suspension.

In the ABS kit you will receive;

2 x Front Speed Sensor adaptors.
2 x Master cylinder pressure sensor adaptors.
1 x Part Number List.
1 x Wiring Diagram + Instructions.

In the DSC kit you will receive all the of the above +
1 x DSC column kit.
1 x Programming for the E30 chassis.

The ABS Kit will retail for £199

The DSC Kit will retail for £399

Some photos - As you can imagine, a lot of time and work has been spent in building up this kit, the photos are taken in such a way to stop people copying the designs before any have sold!

The Steering angle sensor is still going through development, this is a solution one of my friends came up with and this is one we are going to develop further.

More photos and information to come.

Any questions, please ask away - To date, two DSC kits have already been sold!

They are simply not compatible with the MK60. (Which uses a totally new 'active' sensor).

Thanks Matie,

So many pro cars are running this abs, it seems crazy not to start fitting it to the e30 chassis.

Not tempted?

I would be had I:

1. Taken the ABS off my shed
2. Not agreed to get the drive block paved (and therefore now broke!!)

Well if you change your mind :)

The complete hardware can be had from a breaker for around £200-£300. There's the fitting and loom, but still this is a fraction of a Bosch M4.

A UK Customer sent me some photos of his install with an S54, CSL carbon airbox and MK60 using the ABS + DSC Kit.

Its still work in progress for him and he told me he needs to dress the area properly, but hes just really keen to get the system in and hooked up to the SM54 for traction control (ASC) and to provide the ECU with a road speed input so he can rev past 5k.

He needs to use the stubby MC to clear the large CSL airbox.

Had a few hours on the car this evening, thought I would test my autosport abs speed sensor modification and make sure I have the correct pinouts.

Image

Plenty of ETFE cabling for the loom.

Image

The camera was operated by yourself truly and trying to spin the wheel and hold the phone at the same time was proving to be difficult! Main thing is, the wiring is good and I can adapt the rest of the sensors.

To all those interested in these MK60 ABS/DSC kits i have purchased and fitted this kit to my S54 converted E30.
The instructions and wiring info supplied is clear detailed and informative, i had no problem understanding or executing the installation on my E30. With the help of some diagnostic software(speak to Andrew) i was also able to test the ABS pump, actuate each caliper individually, operate the automatic brake bleed function, align the vehicle speed sensor (yaw sensor), steering angle sensor, access full diagnostics, check the front and rear brake pressures as the brakes are applied and the rotational speed of each wheel, basically everything you could think or might want to do.
Once working the MK60 pump also supplied my S54 engine with the proper all important vehicle road speed signal which has released my engine ECU from limp mode allowing me to achieve the full power and 8.3k rev limit it is designed to deliver with a bog standard E46 M3 ECU, no expensive reflash or sending away to someone to ignore the original map and work their way around a limp ECU for x amount of £,$,or euro.
My first drive of the car was in pouring rain, this i thought was a good opportunity to see how good it performs on my E30 and to compare it to my old familiar E30 abs system.
My first impressions were brilliant, the system seems to work quicker and much more effectively than the old set up, i continued to up my speed and slam on the brakes even at 50mph down a steep hill in pouring rain i could not get the car into a skid the brakes would apply release apply and before i knew it i had come to a halt with no fuss or bother.
Its been on the car now for over a month and iv'e had no issues or problems, it inspires much more confidence than the original system so much so im using the cars power a lot more in situations i was previously more cautious.
The pump on the car at the moment is a standard E46 MK60 unit, Andrew has since supplied me a reprogrammed pump ECU with the CSL map and M Track etc etc (cheers bud) i will be fitting this soon and will update my experience with this set up.
So far its all been defiantly worth it and i have one of the coolest ABS brake set ups you can fit on an E30.

Ajay!!! Wow thank you for the update, I'm really pleased you like it so much, it really is an awesome upgrade and opens the doors for all sorts of engine conversions, including the range of modern turbo diesels, which I think in an e30 wagon would be pretty cool!

Keep the updates coming, would love to know what you think of the CSL ABS map and the M track DSC

can this be fitted into an e36?

I think traction control would be handy with the power that im after

also - apart from this kit, what else would be needed to complete before fitting?

Hi Quaser,

Sadly traction control (ASC) will only function with a modern E46 > Engine, It will not work with the E36 generation of cars.

With regards to fitting to an E36, I will have to get back to you on that one. I simply don't know and wouldn't like to say without being sure.

The issues will be with the total number of teeth on the reluctor wheels and the location of the sensors on the legs/arms.

Other than that, the system is fully stand alone, and in theory is able to be fitted to all cars! Many many Porsche GT3 owners are fitting this, some shops are charging anything from 7-12k to retrofit. The CSL maps and ECU's are very very sought after and currently a new CSL ecu is €1200 from BMW new.

HTH

Ok - thanks for a quick response

currently, my e30 doesn't have any abs, or abs piping - could you tell me what parts I will need from other cars in addition to your kit.

The e30 is a convertible with a 2.8 engine. Do you think its worth retrofitting this or a standard e30 abs system as the car will not be tracked etc

Well, any car you fit this too will need to have front legs and rear arms that can accept ABS sensors. Generally speaking those cars that dont have ABS from factory wont have the correct hardware.

Assuming you have all the legs and arms, then yes I would give you links to where you can buy all of the pipes, connections and tools needed to flare the pipes etc.

Actually, I think its worth it, its a fantastic upgrade to a four channel system reserved for some top end motors, yes technology has moved forward but not massively compared with the MK60.

Its entirely up to you, but all those Porsche guys cant be wrong!

Dan, any ABS system that doesn't have a Yaw and Gyro sensor is not even worth looking at.

The idea of me fitting a data logging system to my car is to show real numbers as to how good the ABS really is. Lots of racers are retrofitting the MK60 CSL system to their cup cars, the only ABS thats better is the Bosch M4 and thats way out of my budget :(

Will this work with any calipers? WMS for example?

Very clever stuff!-

Reminds me of the purple AWD turbo civic on pistonheads where the guy built his own active aero spoiler, traction control and antilag system.

Wow, love his rear spoiler, not sure if it would work quite fast enough, but as a first build its pretty awesome! Great link :)

The MK60 will work with any calliper combination :) Its especially powerful when connected to an engine ECU which has a CAN bus and traction/launch control 8) Im running it in standalone mode and not connected to the ECU, just the ABS and DSC sub functions, pretty amazing with the M-track mode and CSL Map 8)
