Can any of the E30 M3 racers advise me whether or not they recommend keeping their ABS fitted when used in conjuction with a twin master brake cylinder system please?

I removed mine and regret it ever since.

The M3 ABS isn't the greatest of ABS there is. For a start it's 3 channel, meaning your rear axles is treated a one brake.
And as soon you add stiffer suspension and grippier tyres, the tuning of the factory ABS is out.

If I would have to do it again I would retain the ABS but fit a switch to the brains.
-- in dry track conditions and where you are sure what you're doing, switch it off
-- dry/wet tracks, switch it back on.
-- if it doesn't work to your favour, switch it off.

Or get a proper 4 channel race tuned ABS. 2-3k the least!

Race car or trackday car?

I'd take it out or disable like Uwe says first to decide.

My E30 trackday car doesn't have ABS and I don't miss it. My E36 M3 does have ABS and I reckon it cut in too early. That said it's the one driving aid I value on the road.

I just wanted ABS for miserable conditions. In the dry you can switch it off. And on the road of course you want it.

I drove home from a track day at Brands and wasn't paying attention going into Dartford tunnel. Few cars bracked in front of me and I hammered on the brake pedal. Needless to say that my nicely bedded in track day brake pads locked my road tyres up in a split second and I skidded in a new'ish 3 series boot!

Not saying ABS would have rescued me, but could have.

Yes absolutely, on the road ABS is invaluable, that's why I asked if it's a race or trakday car.

I think for your application the stock ABS will be unusable.
It will work to a degree but I can't imagine that you will have any consistent results.
Try it but switch it off if it becomes a nuisance.

My m3 is an ex rally car and the ABS was removed, also I am not sure how it would work with a twin master pedal box set up

It's still on my race car but I have a switch on the dash to turn it off in the dry and on in the wet.

To be honest even in the dry I have sometime left it on by mistake and it hardly ever come on unless I trail brake in to corners stupidly. But then i do have quite a big set of brakes on the car so ABS unlikely to kick in unless a serious mistake was made.

I know thats what a number of the other drivers do as well have the ability to turn it on and off.

why should it be different?
you have two cylinders, one for front and one for rear.
doesn't matter if they are side by side or tandem.

balance bar only gives you the opportunity to fiddle with the split front-rear.

i noticed the other day that the wheel sensors on the integrale i'm breaking are identical to the e30 m3 ones.

the lancia had a very complex for the period proper 4 channel abs with accelerometers. it was a brilliant system which only ever triggered when you really needed it to. i wonder how much work it would be to put something like that into an e30?
cheers,

harry

well the integrale wasn't a master of electric reliability in the first place.

If you can find out of how to feed the ABS brain with all the inputs required, I can't see why this shouldn't work.

Unless of course the whole thing has it's italian moments.

it's bosch system, and pretty sure the look for it was entirely seperate from the rest of the car loom as it was an optional extra.

saying that, the electrics on my lancia were no worse than the e30, despite a far more complicated check control system! better in fact, as the central locking continued to work until the demise of the rest of the car!

i'll have to have a look / measure up of the pump unit. i seem to remember it being mounted in a very similar way to the e30s.
cheers,

The E36 race car I work on still has the ABS with the above described on/off switch to suit conditions.
