I'm intend to use my E30 on a mix of loose and tarmac next year but I'm struggling to find an LSD at the breakers...
So the question is what aftermarket LSD do you guys recommend and where do you get the from.
I've heard the Quaife ATB rear wheel drive diffs are pony am I better off going for a Gripper or something?
What LSD and where to get one?

Where are you? Maybe you can get an E30 LSD from someone here? I'm not sure about the aftermarket LSDs. I have an E30 4.1 LSD that came from a touring car. It was rebuilt and set to 90lb preload (I think standard is about 60lb). I race on a dirt/clay circuit and also do track days and sprints on bitumen circuits and that differential is great, although I don't have much experience with many others. On the dry bitumen tracks I get no wheelspin in my 323i and on the dirt it grips well and seems predictable.

Stappin, I assume you're familiar with Atlas LSD units as you have a rallying background?
They're the same internals as the BMW ZF LSD, if you can get a hold of an E30 LSD you can fill it with Atlas plates and increase the locking with the pressure rings.
I run a 4 plate one in my Compact and it's absolutely excellent. (70 lbs preload for tarmac, 80 lbs for gravel.)
What ratio do you want?

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the Atlas LSD as I'm from a front wheel drive background, but I know a bloke with a MK2 so he will probably help. Do you have a parts list and where to buy the plates? No idea on ratios yet that was gonna be my next questionM3Compact wrote:Stappin, I assume you're familiar with Atlas LSD units as you have a rallying background?

I don't know if you can get individual parts, we buy complete repair kits. (4 plates etc) The housing needs 50 thou machining off to take the extra plates. Any rallying outlet will sell them, Ԛ£120ish.Do you have a parts list and where to buy the plates?
Ratio wise is a personal choice thing. I've got a 4.45, to use with 17" tarmac, 16" gravel tyres, 0.828 top gear.
There's 3.66, 3.91, 4.1 and 4.45 available.
Simon,
I'm severely tempted to have a crack at Rallying, any sites worth visiting for reserching on various championships, groups etc to start in, might be tempted into an E30 to get experience and signatures

It's the 'BMW RWD challenge', for fixed spec E30 325i.
It's run by Kevin Furber and Pat Flynn, the guys who have run the 205 challenge for years.
I think Stappin knows the details better than me, but it's aimed at budget rallying with strictly controlled car mods.

Yep, spoken to Pat about it last year, i might have a crack, I have a sponsor that wants to do something in Rallying next year but i would need lots of experience 1st, so this might be ideal

You'll probably love it taffy, but just to make sure you will like it in rear wheel drive go to a rally school and have a go.
Also where do you live? Then I can find out who your local rallying motor club are for you.
Try http://www.bridgend-automobile-club.co.uk/ they are your local motor club if you pop in there on a club night and tell someone you wanna go rallying. I'm sure they will help as they are a pretty good club.

I'm sure I would, i'd like to have a crack at the Wales Rally, i was amazed how easy it is for a clubbie to enter, just signatures and quite a hefty entry fee required and you're in the WRC!
I'm just outside of Cardiff, appreciate that
