Picked this up off a generous friend yesterday.

As you can see she's a 530i. No rust, lovely clean interior, no wear on the seats, big lazy 6 with an auto box. Kenwood mask with 6CD shuffle. All the usual electrics, none curbed wheels. He has looked after it for a customer for close on 10 years. He wanted it to go to a good home and I was more than happy to provide it. It will make a good tow car for the jaffa cake.

What did I pay for it? Buttons, actually even less than that.....

I'm afraid I've never rated autos as tow cars, but if you got it cheap it won't matter if the gearbox drops out of the bottom.

what's wrong with an auto tow car?? I have a 528i tourer auto as a tow car and it's just perfect! On b-roads I shift the gears manually, but as soon there is a good strech of road I put in sport and forget about it.

Check the towing capacity in the manual! I was stung on a 520 i bought for towing, only to discover it'll only tow 1200kg.

Mondeo's always have high towing weights. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but my dads 54 plate Tdci is 1750kgs which is pretty good. You'd be close to the gross total of 3.5 ton with the car as well which is all you can tow with some licences.

Those old 530's are brilliant cars. Is the best car our family has ever owned. A great workhorse. We had one and did 216,000 miles in it and it never broke down ever. We only replaced consumables e.g. oil, plugs, leeds, 5 exhausts, ball joints and brakes discs (lots) in our ownership. Now been sold and current owner has the mileage to 300,000k. Will make good tow car. should be good for 1500 - 1600kgs.

Says 1600kg. Depending on your trailer (i.e., it's less than 400kg), you should be just about OK.

Just out of interest, as im towing mine for the first time soon. Where do you position the car on the trailer to get the easiest/smoothest tow? More or less weight as poss towards the front?

Just slightly forwards. Weight should press down on the hitch but not much, max nose weight will be in your car and towball specs.
