May sound daft, but the talk of lowering the steering column reminded me that I wondered about fitting a shorter shift mechanism from a Z3 but also extending the length of the gearstick so the gearknob is higher, and therefore closer to your hand. I figured the short shift would counteract the extra length of the gearstick so it wouldn't be like a Transit gearchange!
Anyone done this?
Z3 shifter and longer gearstick?

I think there is an X3 one does the job you are after..
