You can do quite well in the wet. This is from a very wet qualifying at Pembrey:hoshy wrote: How do you guys gee on in the class E kumho?

Much bigger gaps in the dry, though. This is from a dry race at Oulton:

But we're not with the Kumho's this year. We've joined up with the Classic Touring Car Club and now run on Toyo tyres and can second-enter in the new Pre-93 touring cars series. However, I believe we can still run in Kumho Class E (on Kumhos) should we want to.
Interesting thanks. Nice to see the e30s still pulling out some magic... Must be hellish trying to keep them underwraps in the wet? Lots of spins?
I should have realised you're not with Kumho, after you mentioned the tyre change earlier.
Am interested to know about the regs for the class e kumho, and the classic touring. Eventually I'd like to run in something that allows me to change engine management. Probably going to start with milltek first though. As my car is perfect for it, 2dr 318i

hoshy, they're actually quite nice in the wet. Especially the 318 as it's better balanced. Not many spins as you can hold quite a big "angle of dangle"
As you say, the Milltek (now Production BMW Championship) is a great place to start. If you want to start tinkering with the engine etc then you would be able to move up into one of the Pre-93 classes. The PBMW and Pre-93 regs are here:
http://www.classictouringcars.com/pages/techregs.asp
I've just checked and Class E Kumho does not exist any more. There is an invitation class that accepts *any* BMW (on Kumho V70A tyres of course) but you cannot score points. The Kumho regs are here:
http://www.bmwrdc.com/documents/2006-Dr ... -12-05.pdf
Just noticed that you could do some tuning and enter the new class D though.

Ok guys, finance plan has been set in to motion. Still a few more questions.
1. Can I take my ards test without a current road licence (banned) - who do I contact?
2. I want a good roll cage. what sort of cash and where to buy? fitting cost if not an issue. Is 500 a reasonble budget?
3. How excited am I !?!?

hoshy,
Now might be the time to visit
http://forums.seloc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=36
and ask further questions in there.
You'll find a bigger audience of Production BMW drivers who have all been through this before... well, apart from the driving ban perhaps.

If your aftter a really top cage then you probably wont find better than custom cages.
The cage costs Ԛ£500 and Ԛ£500 for fitting but I know a cheaper way around this now
Puts you at about Ԛ£800 I think all fitted, let me know if you want some info on that
No idea about the ARDS thing
Probably about as excited as me- first testing this saturday!!!!!!!
If you are looking at racing this year maybe worth getting over to SELOC and registering as from all acounts places are filling up

Cheers Liam, I do have an account over on the seloc forum. Just been happy keeping this thread ticking over for others here who may be interested in doing the same. I know neil (320Touring) is interested.
Jimmy, are custom cages a company? Do I have to have them do the fitting? I would prefer cost wise to have it installed by my father (foc). So cage choice must be based on third party installation. I still want a safe cage though

Custom Cage cage is Ԛ£550 just for the bent bars and the profiled straight bitshoshy wrote: Jimmy, are custom cages a company? Do I have to have them do the fitting? It is then 5/600 to get fitted (3rd party)
Custom cages can fit them (badly) for more money though
Sparco/OMP are other bolt in options and SD ones I believe are still available
The CC is a much stronger cage with lots more triangulation and alot more bars, it may cost a bit more but you will then save by not needing strut braces as the cage welds to the front and rear towers.
I wasn't going to go top end on safety but as I said above that crash and advise from likes of liam made be think and I may be a bit OTT now but at least i'll live in a big stack!
Your call really
Rollcentre also do a decent one I believe, either way do NOT skimp on this, full multipoint weld in is the only way to go, forget bolt in if you can

Pofiled should fit easier, but to be honest they are so badly profiled you'll end up reprofiling them yourself. (basilcally cut to angle rather than squared bars/pipes)
the Custom Cage really is a professional fit job- not by them though, and prob worth you using someone who knows what they are doing (no offence meant to your mate). But he will need to reprofile most bars with requires the correct kit etc
They guy who has done mine has a jig he made up especially for fitting custom cages- he does alot!!

Worthwhile advice. It's my father who's been in the trade for 30 odd years (and owns his own garage, that was custom built) who'll fit it. We'll at least evaluate the situation first. He won't attempt it unless he's sure.
If they're so bad at fitting their own cages, are they that good at making them?

its not really the fitting of the cage that they do badly, more the holes left in the car.
From what i've heared where they go engine bay and boot they dont do the best job of filling the holes around the cage in the bulkheads.
its a very good strong cage if fitted correctly but very involved, i'll try and get some pics up of mine
but you can see whats involved here:

so... how's everyone gettin on with their cars?
I won't start mine til I've got at least a 1K saved up but things are still looking favourite for hitting the final race of the season.
How much is registration for the season?
Also does anybody have any onboard footage?

If you decide to go 6 point cage route can look at Safetydevices and contact AutomacGB at automacgb@yahoo.co.uk..regs allow additions to the cage to triangulate if required.
But great idea to discuss with guys outthere...it a case of having a strong car to start with as you want to walk away
Advice is free, but parts cost money and mistakes can be expensive
Good luck
