Had a car in build early on in the thread, roll cage just going in, this is how it ended up in race trim. Weld in cage, usual PBMW spec 318i. Photo is being squeezed up onto the kerbs at the Thruxton chicane. A hefty sump guard was part of the build luckily enough :D

Image

This is the latest car, a 318is. Started off last autumn as a reasonably clean standard non sunroof car.

Image

Don't have many build photos, but over last winter it got changed into this for TTRS.

SD cage
Coilovers
Lightened everywhere
Live mapped on RR (Thanks ShepsEvo3)
Uber light TD alloys
4.1 LSD (Thanks Gareth)
Coil on plug conversion
Fibreglass bonnet
970kg with quarter tank of fuel

Will be moved into the garage next week to be stripped down again to hunt for another 40kg weight to remove, will also be working on an R1 bike carb conversion with some cams so it should be a bit more pokey next season.
For sale - E30 320i racer project - sold.

970kg, now that's light. What have you removed to get it down to there?

I like the quick lift mounts on the rear bumper, and your hiding half your skills based on the build thread on the rally forum

Fibreglass bonnet on 4 pins so all of the front stuff cut away, original bonnet rear roller mechs and brackets gone, loads of odd redundant brackets and clips etc gone (eg the one that holds the spare wheel in place), original bumper shock mountings and inner linings gone, CoP conversion so original coil packs/brackets/plug leads gone, rubber door/bonnet/boot seals gone, rubbing strips removed, bootlid is outer skin only on bonnet pins so all hinges, brackets etc gone, conversion to manual windows and central locking binned so motors, door looms etc gone, few kg gone from the flywheel, power steering pump pipes etc all binned, 5.6kg race battery, drilled/grooved brake discs all round (every little helps  ), basically anything not needed was got rid of and any brackets where no strength required were swapped for alloy (eg the one that holds the clutch fluid reservoir). Pro Race 1 alloys about 6kg each, and we run on 195/50 Toyos, so they are probably lighter than some other tyres. Still 40kg over minimum race weight though, so have a bit more to find hence the strip down for another look for redundant stuff over winter. Have a few ideas, but need to keep dashboard and glass (regs) and I want to keep the standard petrol tank and heaters as I drive it to and from races.

MartinPallot that build project looks incredible :thumb:

Im really pleased with rwd too, way better than fwd i was used to! Upgraded from my polo g40, it was much faster than the e30 on the straights (170+ bhp and sub 800kg weight) but just wasnt upto scratch in the corners/braking without spending way more money.

Hey Shaun,

Do yourself a favour and either put the factory airbox back it, or move the pod filter as close as you can in behind the headlights, and make a cold air box for it. At the moment, it will only suck in the air that has passed through the radiator and past the engine (both will be considerably hotter than the ambient temperature). As it currently stands, you will be costing yourself lots of valuable power.

Also the Polo looks sweet.

Cheers,
Michael.

Thanks i loved the polo, but just felt like time to move on.
Yeah i know about the filter, doesnt fit properly either so its winding me up.
Im not normally one for cone filters, do you reckon the airbox is better than any aftermarket closed induction system?

Personally, I prefer a cone filter with a good cold air box (that is why I have one on my race car). If you can't build a decent closed cold air system then stay with the very good factory airbox. Don't think though that you need to buy an aftermarket cold airbox though, as they can be easily made at a fraction of the cost.

I know what you mean about the polo. I have had cars I really enjoyed in the past, but felt that it was time to move on.
