Now we are running sticky tyres we seem to get low pressure light come on high-g (for an e30 that is !) corners... any easy solutions - its a 325 with 525eta crank. Oh and dry sumping isnt an option :?

My dad has managed to make his own baffled sump for his E3 3.5 lump, looks fairlyish simple depending on how advanced you need it. I think it comprises of a couple of rubber like panels in metal to allow oil to flow through but not to surge back round a corner etc

those details aren't exact but some thing to that effect, it cost him £20 to get it welded and about £30 with metal and other components

I was getting the dreaded red light syndrome when using slicks at Silverstone GP Track...... proper scary putting the clutch in half way thru a corner, eh 8O !

I wasn't keen on pulling the sump off so tried overfilling it (OK, temporary fix I know .... but these engines are cheap enough to take risks with ?). Went to Cadwell Park and had no red light issues at all ...... the test would be at Silverstone another time.

ive noticed a few of you suffering from this. once jimmy c has sent me his sump, and i know whats involved, i will look at providing baffled sumps with an increase in capacity if needed on an exchange basis, if anyone is interested. :)

Will get you a sump off this week Nigel :)

No added capacity for me please , just a good system to keep the oil around the pick up, and not sloshing out the way

Also interested in you strengthening the base as we spoke about.

My mates packing up the cobra bits, and sending a cheque tomorrow

Cheers

Baffled sump with more ground clearance (ie bigger wings, less depth) would be amaaaazing. I had the red light come on at 6k rpm drifting a left handed hairpin slip road the first time I drove the car. I then topped it to exactly on the maximum on the dipstick and it's thankfully not happened since.

As Jason mentioned about the scraper
IIRC you can get them from Either
Ireland Engineering
Bimmerworld
or
Turner Motorsports

They claim it stops the oil creeping up the block during cornering

I'll probably be fitting one to my tourer once the turbo's fitted

dry sumping isnt an option
Any specific reason?

I've had mixed experiences with (non-BMW) baffled sump pans in the past, even with 'big wing' type conversions.

It's a difficult thing to 'guesswork' ime if there are no proven designs to copy. :?

ive been playing around with a 325 sump and have come up with this, just need to add the baffle inside to help the oil. it has an extra wing on the side that holds 0.5litres and a thick alloy plate on the bottom to help guard the sump and protect it. we are still trying to work out a final price but they will be offered on a return basis at around £88inc vat.

Just to say have had sump mod done by Alloyproducts and can voucher for it doing the job. :thumb:

Have just come back from Spa where there is a fast 4th gear down hill left hander and last year the oil light used to come on for a couple of seconds every lap... this year, same track, more grip as slicks and bone dry not damp.... but sump modded and NO light

Excellent design! Would definately be interested in one of these!

Two questions -

1. What will the turnaround be?
2. Can the sump be removed/refitted without removing anything else with engine in place? (Sorry not only a newbie but also mechanical numptie!!)

Cheers

Can answer 2 not 1.

The sump can be replaced with the engine in place but I wouldn't, its too fiddly, there are plenty of threads on here on how to do it but it all boils down to getting at least a couple extra inches to move in which require the engine to be raised. Do not worry though it is not difficult at all, just possibly a little time consuming especuially if you've never done it before.

Cheers Nigel,

I definately want one, it's just a case of finding the time/able mate to get the sump off and send it up to you.

I am looking at doing another track day at Le Mans on 7th July - would you recommend that I need it for then?
