What brage upgrades can anybody recomend ?

Ive heard about one using Corrado G60 discs and RX7 calipers, where the hub needs to be modded to except the disc and the hub lugs or caliper lugs have to be modded ?
has anybody done this oe is there any other mix and match set ups ?

Try keri-wms mate, i fitted his 4 pots which made a massive difference. Pads rattle from time to time, but not an everyday car, so no hassel..... winkeye

Why does it being your everyday car mandate that you do an unnecessarily complicated brake conversion? Why bother modifying the hub if there are other better options that don't require modifications?

Every article one reads about improving brakes recommends starting with braided metal brake hoses and good brake fluid. The easiest upgrade are better discs like, for example, ATE slotted power discs and some Mintex C-Tech pads - both available from Eurocarparts.

It will become a track car eventually mate and I already have a set of Brembo's and 356 discs ready for my cosworth so dont really want to go down the same road.

But surely doing a bodge together of various parts from a scrapheap isn't so much going down that road as understeering past the junction and through a hedge? Why piss about modifying the hubs when you can bolt on a properly tested good quality kit for not much more money? Besides, there are plenty of track E30s running standard brakes with no problem at all (mine for example).

Braided hoses and race brake fluid are already sat on my tool box waiting to be fitted to what ever car I get but was goin to get on the look out for calipers and discs so they can all be fitted straight away with a new set of bearings etc :D

I'd hold off and see how you like it on the stock brakes. My driving is very hard on brakes and the E30 is the first standard setup i've been happy with (non-oem disks and pads, but still the same sizes). Changing disks and calipers for larger ones isn't that tricky further down the line but there are plenty of options that fit straight on.

The standard brakes may be a good set up already I just want to try and upgrade them a bit especially if I end up going on a Spa and a Ring trips next year ! I want to just go to a local motor factors and within a day have what i want over the counter etc !

You don't always need a big brake kit.
If your stock system is working perectly like it was when it was new some 20 years ago, I am sure most of you would be happy.. trouble is when the system gets old and sticky it can get very bad, very quickly.

I gave my old Hartge 325 a complete brake overhaul and it became a different car.. The brakes would always fade at Cadwell Park, usually at Mansfield and I thought it was just because the car was underbraked. Acting on the advice of one of our club instructors I invested in a new master cylinder.. made up some new copper brake lines.. fitted a set of six braided hoses, gave the calipers a thorough cleanout, removed and polished the pistons, new seals, new fluid, standard discs (from BMW) and a set of Mintex 1144's all round.

The difference was dramatic.. no more fade, bags more confidence and a new found ability to keep up with the M3's.

It just needed a bit of TLC and some worn out bits replacing.

This is my own version of a 4 pot setup that they all said wouldn't work

Brembo's from an E38 728i and 302 x 28mm disks from a Chrysler Voyager

Disk mounting face needs re-drilled and a caliper bracket needs manufactured
Image
Image
You need to file a little bit of the caliper, but not much
Image
Caliper bracket with cutout to clear the ABS sensor
Image
Just enough clearance with a 16" wheel(wheels have a 40mm offset and I'm using a 30mm hubcentric wheel spacer and conversion studs
Image

Just another option to have a think about

+1

That's the same route I took. Everything checked and replaced where needed. New master cylinder, rotors, pads, fluid...you get the idea.

ATE Powerdiscs at the front, OEM rears. EBC Yellowstuff pads front, Greenstuff rear. AP Racing 600 fluid. etc., etc.

Couldn't be happier. The thing stops on a dime.

I would have replaced the brake lines but they were in such good nick that I'll hold off a bit. I'll end up getting braided lines eventually.

Not off hand but I just made a template using MDF and copied it to some 15mm thick hardened steel plate.

This looks a good conversion for me. Just picked up a 728i! How much is involved in making up the caliper brackets?

1st off you'd need to make a template, then copy that for your mounting bracket in either HE30 or mild steel.
MarkT wrote:PS would it work with the g60 disks?
The 280mm G60 disks are too small, both in diameter and thickness

The 302's were the smallest I've managed to get to work with those calipers.

I have a contact who can make some anodised caliper brackets in HE 30 for £95ea +vat if that's any use.

I may also be able to get ones made up in mild steel from my template and/or template drawings subject to a suitable deposit

Had already looked it up in my little black engineers book and then even went all super nerd and compared both T4 and T6 tempers of 6082 against 6061 T4 and T6 tempers for tensile strength, hardness and %age elongation @ break

god I am sad if that's all I can do after a 12 hour shift :o

I don't really want to go down the 16" wheel route. Trackday car and tyres are going to be a fair bit more expensive. With the brackets, do you have to offset the bracket/caliper or do they not have to be notched?

I didn't have to offset mine at all.I did however use a thin spacer (washer) between the bracket and the caliper to get it sitting right

You also have to remember that the disks I've used, have a different offset to standard E30 and G60 disks

That's the only thing that concerns me to be honest. I'm most probably going down the RX7 calipers and G60 disks route. It's only a very simple bracket required.
