ok just ordered f/g bonnet with pins from taffy

do most of you ditch all brackets and just use pins?

does anyone retain existing mounting brackets - and locate pins into these so that you can still use bonnet release mechanism - and so that in the event of a prang the bonnet raises at rear and goes over screen opposed to into it?

10kg weight saving on bonnet has made me realise that losing some weight from beer gut will probably offer most benefit :)

well - bonnet and pins were something like £175+delivery and VAT
i have got a 6 pot which is stripped out and there's serious weight @front but fook all at the back
well worth it imho - but also doing work on it @moment all the time it seems and being able to
whip the bonnet off everytime would make it soo much easier

hmm a bit too much to buy for no reason, but when I've got the $$$'s to play with I may treat the 'ol girl to a new lid.. it's only a road car so I shouldn't really be thinking about serious weight loss winkeye winkeye

anyhoo I agree with being able to get the bonnet off in a flash but they are handy when you need to hang an inspection light from them - like tonight!! :D

Sorry I can't help with the technical aspect but I may ask for what you did in the future  rock on

Glad I could help mate, they need to go on pins though are they're designed to lose weight and keeping the brackets and stuff is just uneccessary.

Upside to no hinges is saved weight, if it's a pure race/track/rally car I'd go for pins in all four corners. Ease of access is unbeatable as well.

If it's a fast road/trckday car that's going to have a nice paintjob then you need to consider what you will do with the bonnet when it's off, it WILL fall over at some point, they always do :chuckle:

Also if it's a rally car you'll need to think about extra support for a lamp pod if you've gone for something superlight.

My kitcar has a liftoff bonnet, thankfully it's not painted yet but it's still a nightmare when you need to get access at the roadside or in the wind.

Food for thought I hope.

For some of the reasons above is why i make a double skin GRP bonnet with std mount points but still only coming in at 7.5 kg, you can either pin it at the front and use the rear sliders easy for one man to fit and remove or pin it all round and just have a bonnet that wont blow away on the roadside.
