Yesterday after I got back from the French Car Show, I set about using my new airtools winkeye

Here is what we had at the start - as you can see there was a channel cut out for a rollcage at the B-Pillar, but alot of weight still remained in (runner, metal etc) as advised by JimmyC - cheers bud!

So here are the pics - they speak louder than words

This is what I had to start with

Everything still in tact

Rear cradle for sunroof (when open)

My new air-nibbler

10minutes later, we had this

the sealant gave way on the back, and drivers side which was handy

Then nibblers big brother came out to play

Passenger side done - no channel anymore

Excess metal

Drivers side a little neater due to come off at the sealant

Drivers runner and mechnism coming out

Finito!

Passenger side needs some tidying up - but happy with progress.

Big sheet t weighed 3.8kg, and the bag of lengths of metal inc runners were 3.3kg!

I've bought a holesaw drill bit, so more progress updated later today!

Cheers

Fcuk me sideways...sideways, you don't hang about 8O :D and what the hell is a nibler when it's at home? Sorry not up to speed with the lingo!

Love the pics and will be very handy when I come to do mine. I've got the angle grinder but would you advise tackling the job with just that or do I need a Nibler??

I'm loving the thought of 7.1kgs removed to take me to 1032.90 KG's(approx of course winkeye )

Ian

BTW - getting my car ready for Mad Sunday (in six days) here on the IoM for TT week, The mountain road (TT course) one way only, mainly bikes but some fast cars - and NO SPEED LIMIT

a nibbler is just a cutting tool that has no blade... it just nibbles... lol

doesn't leave any sharp edges, and is very intricate! (sp?)

didnt' do anymore on her today - just washed it!

Still more of that sunroof cage to come out ;)

think the remaining bits are bonded, with one or 2 spot welds (cant remember) so heat the inner roof, drill a few welds and it should pop out- not too hot or you'll warp the roof :)

yes, yesss I know you'd say that lol winkeye

need to get the rest out - else my passenger will rip their heads open! lol

not prepared top drill the welds out - as i'll end up going through the roof

gentlely grind them out

Oh - and i've ruined my interior mirror, and windscreen from the sparks from the angle grinder - should have masked them up.

Does anyone have a spare rear view mirror please?

The sound insulation panels behind the rear trims and door trims are about 350grams each, for a total of 1.4kgs.
Then there is all the heat shielding and insulation under the car, and also the insulation behind the dash.

or you could be uber-cool and have the pwnest E30 with carbon fibre hood, boot, dash, mirrors, sunroof panel and boot!!! RoXr.

Or just get a file out and start shaving the metal back.
Nothing's lighter than a hole.
