I need to find out the best e30 gearbox for my 318is as I'm upping the power and track daying it next year is a 318is reliable enough also is a roll cage really worth it as they are well expensive any help will be great [/quote]
What you upping the power to? Alot of the lads running M52b28's have about 230hp (approx) going through the standard E30 M42 boxes and nobody ever moans....
Hope that helps
Hope that helps
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Although power is of course a contributing factor, it's the torque figure you should be looking at over the power when it comes to this. The more torque the more force being put upon the components.
I'm running a e36 m3 evo 6 speed box on mine. good fun but not renound for being strong in the e36's but then i'm a bit off M3 bhp and torque at 285bhp and 225ft/lb
the guy on the M42 club with the turbo 2.1 is running a 325 box at about 320bhp iirc and he has killed it once but then its only a standard box so he can just buy another.

You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity
M42 Supercharged 285bhp + M3 6speed box
getrag boxes are given a rating in torque, however this is a peak value, and generally under rated by a long stretch in practice - you'd expect to use pass more than the quoted torque before it starts to cause problems318isturbo wrote:I need to find out the best e30 gearbox for my 318is as I'm upping the power and track daying it next year is a 318is reliable enough also is a roll cage really worth it as they are well expensive any help will be great

Will the 325 box go straight on or do you have to modify anything like the bell housing or the m3 gearbox did you have to do any mod's to it or was it straight on
