Trailer size

Am looking at getting a trailer for my trackday car. What size are you guys using? I've got the oppurtunity to view a 14'x6' but I reckon it could be a bit big?

Id be more concerned about the max load the trailer can carry (mine is rated at 1200kg for race car, race car is 1000kg)

Only issue with size is storage and manouverability.

what are you towing with? Keep in mind the total mass your towing is allowed to tow.

Brian James Clubman 1400 is what I've got, carries an E30 really well. Second hand prices are as much as new these days so you might as well spec a new one to how you want it, they'll turn it round in about 2 weeks as well.

I use a double axle trailer licenced to 2000kg GVM. Brakes on both axles. Load-bed is 4m x 1.75m, just slighly smaller than your size of 14' x 6'. My tow vehicle is rated to tow 1500kg.

Thanks for the feedback. My tow vehicle is a Volvo V50 2.0 diesal and the trailer is £800 second hand (I'd love a new Brian James but cant afford one). The Volvo can carry 1350kg. Storage is not a problem but manouverability might be!!

So you are NOT going to tow the E30 then if that is the volvos permitted braked towing capacity. Or you find a trailer that weighs next to nothing.
You need something with can tow at least 1800kgs, I bought a E39 for this. 2000kgs.
Trailer+car+tools+spare tyres+ petrol + passengers and you will see the total mass of your "train" close to the limit quite quickly. Beware, towing a car is not as simple as it may look, if 1500kgs behind you start to ,ove uncontrolled you need good nerves and skills

Cheers Uwe, I've been doing the maths this morning. I appreciate your comments and am not someone who under estimates what's involved. On reflection I'll probaly be looking to purchase a new Brian James Clubman and tow it with my bro's hilux.

Toyota Hilux is what I tow with Scott. Both the 2.7VVTi petrol and D4D diesel have plenty of torque for towing. But be careful, The Hilux is itself a fairly light vehicle (they don't make them as heavy as they used to) and thus both the single cab and double cab models only have a tow capacity of 1500kg (sfaik). This is fine for me as the weight of my car plus trailer is barely over a ton. However, pile it all up (as Uwe said) and you could be approaching the safe tow limit of your vehicle.

Regardless of how strong the engine is on your tow vehicle you don't wan't to tow a load which is heavier than the vehicle pulling it, unless your trailer has proper hydraulic brakes (as opposed to the standard over-run brakes).

Cheers Geoff, I'm astounded at the limited towing capacity of the hi-lux! My car is stripped out but I think it could be worth sticking it on the scales to get an accurate idea of whats required.

Have a look at Woodford trailers, fantastic quality and when I got my tilt bed a few years ago significantly cheaper than Brian James.

Also significantly better pre sale service was my experience and great after sales service too
