I am a member of the chelmsford motor club and take part in 12-car and full night navigational rallys, we currently have a few beamer members but not enough!!

Be aware it is not a sport for highly polished cars.
I would say its 60% navigational skill and 40 % driving skill that is required, but great fun.
The club runs various events from grass auto tests, night nav rallys to our most popular event the jymkahana, which takes place at the west rayham airfield.
If you have a good navigator/co driver who can read OS maps WELL and a car you do not mind damaging (as a beginner crew), have a go and get involved.

Here is a few pics of what to expect.

or check the site out at www.chelmsfordmc.co.uk

If you need any more info, please drop me a line, I am only new to it
myself, but in the last 18 months of being a member of the CMC have taken part in some great events.

currently competing in a battered E30 320I

That looks like a laugh! Not sure about the lack of cages or helmets though! I've always fancied a go at rallying, but I think my repairs budget would have to increase significantly if I did it!!

This form of rallying is meant to be cheap and affordable, so standard road cars are only allowed with some expections.
most 12-car rallys are run on a friday night over a 50 mile distance on public roads/lanes, bearing in mind the speed limit is 60 mph down the lanes, thats fast enough!!. Passing through 6 or so time controls, you have to push quite hard to make the time, which is always fun in a rear wheel drive beamer.
I spent Ԛ£500 on an A reg 320i, 2 years on and 20 events completed, Its been down one 6ft ditch, sump ripped off and reversed into a few lamp post.
It can be as cheap as you won`t it to be.

I was tempted to have a crack at the RWD challenge this year, but like Paul I'm scared by large repair bills, i've a few mates who rally and some of them spend more per rally than I would in 3 races!
