Half Cage
Moderator: martauto
Car is to be used for road and track and therefore I do not want the front intrusion. In addition I do not want to wear a helmet everywhere I go in case of collision ! (Don't want to crack your head on a cage - possible even with harnesses).
from about 150 depending on finish and cross bracing etc
but a std 1 brace half cage painted about 150 ish powder coating a little more
theres all sorts of extras removable cross section, gussets full x bars and harness bars etc
this only a hobby by the way, will be at the pod come have a look, only doin a half cage at the mo in mine as wont have time to take the dash out,

just out of curiosity, what material are you using? Are you able to bend the tubes yourself? 150 is not a lot IMHO.basky wrote:from about 150 depending on finish and cross bracing etc

Cheers
I was wondering if you use CDS for that sort of money. But anything less than CDS is a waste of money IMHO. You can buy a "core kit" pre bent and just fabricate the straigh tbits yourself.basky wrote:150 would be for a std half cage with single cross bar.
the tube is 42mm o/d (not cds tube)the price would be alot more using cds
i have the use of a pipe bender that pulls the pipe through aswell as bends at the same time giving perfect bends to any angle,we do 3mm s/s handrail 50 mm o/d so 42 cds would not be a problem
most omp or saftey devices ar,nt cds (the cheap one,s anyway)
did a cage for a friend with a cossied up morris minor out of cds, more of a space frame really and the tube was expensive then.that was a full cage and cross brace and harness bars straight through to the suspension turrets.

mandrel bender, nice one! If I would have access to a mandrel bender I would be banned from the work shopbasky wrote:its the mandrel one.
people are takin this to far,i never said iwas doing the cages to msa or fia regs.
no the bloke with moggy is rob slater.his minor has done 11,1 sec quaters running his gas this year.
Basky, not to criticise (and I accept your comment about not building to meet FIA requirements) but if you have access to a mandrel bender then you have the means to build a top-notch cage using CDS. Non-seamless has an awful habit of splitting open along the seam in the event of an impact, and can thus cause severe injuries. For a bit extra (and peace of mind), CDS is the way to go.

"It is amazing how many drivers, even at the Formula-1 level, think that brakes are for slowing the car down." - Mario Andretti
and lets not forget the weight saving. But price difference of CDS is quite significant compared to ERW. Another obstacle is the minimun order you have to put down to get some CDS in the first place for a reasonable price. Not many stockists will sell you just a length or two.GeoffBob wrote:Basky, not to criticise (and I accept your comment about not building to meet FIA requirements) but if you have access to a mandrel bender then you have the means to build a top-notch cage using CDS. yes your all right on the cds tube,
but with it being the first cage for an e30 it would be better for me to do it out of erw as i got loads of it available and free.the cds will be along later when mods and alterations are made.
as for the cds we order that much steel i could get it at a good price i would of thought(but its not quite free)
