Best brakes?

What are - and where can I get - the best trackday use brakes for my 1990 325 Sport? Not just discs, but calipers. I just keep toasting the standard disc/DS2500 pads. I want to keep the standard wheels, though.

you must be doing some heavy late braking to be toasting ds2500's!
leda do some bigger disks abd alloy bells, not sure how good they are but going by leda's reputation they wouln't sell sh!t products. maybe use ds3000 but they are no good for road use,mintex 1144's are about the same as ds2500 , but they do a 1155 compund which is similar as the ds3000, not recomended for road use.

Yep, long story, but it's all about mischief: I help run one of the trackday companies and really fancied a bit of a sleeper after Westfield and Lotus. I make up most of my ground on the brakes, and they're starting to complain ...
We use Wilwood 4 pots & I have to say that for the money they are SUPERB, but we do run Mintex F4 Pads which help tremendously. Compared to the AP kit they are about 80% as good but only 33% of the price, highly recommended.
The brakes Leda sell are Galfer & they specialise in Bikes but I suspect they're quite good but they're very pricey

Slight thread hijack/tangent here ..... . I've been offered some race pads but the guy doesn't know the brand, various serial numbers etc stamped on them and "red dot" written on the back. Ring any bells with anybody?

not sure - but isn't "red dot" the stuff sold in halfords?
Edit: Red dot is also sold by motorsportworld.co.uk so maybe it's not too bad, don't know anyone who has used it though.

Yep no problem, we run the 15" Rimstock & BBS wheels & there are no problem, the kit come with the bracket to adapt so it's a direct swap

willwood 285 radial mount calipers is what i got, fit over 15 inch wheels no probs, bought from rally design in faversham, kent. RECOMEND

We got the Dyanlite 4 pot kit (280mmI believe) & they cost around Ԛ£360+ VAT but we're finding that although the brakes are very good they're melting pads,we use F4R's that are Ԛ£160 / set and we're only getting 3 races out of them! I think the discs are just too small so we're having new brackets made & will use 305mm discs on Ali bells. But, for the money they're SUPERB a real bargain & we got ours from Rally Design as well

Yep, I was wondering about the pads. As it was, I'd been limiting myself to five lap sessions on the DS2500s before they started to lose interest.
I don't think I'll need full race pads, but the Rally Design people mentioned Poly E (900 degrees) or Poly D (800 degrees) pads. I'm completely unfamiliar with these, so will have to wait til Tuesday for their Wilwood man to get back from his hols, unless anyone here has any thoughts or suggestions.
Basically the car is used primarily for track days, its only road use is to and from track and the occasional shuffle around to keep the cobwebs at bay.

my other car (robin hood 7) uses standard XR4 discs and standard ford sierra pads - never had any problems and never had any brake fade. either (A) the car is kinder on brakes as it is lighter or (B) i dont use the brakes enough as i am not going fast enough !!!!
think i will go back to sevens , sounds like they are cheaper to run !!! (JOKE !)

As for track pads I would recommend Performance Friction PF-C97 or PFC-01. I have also heard at lot of good about Pagid RS42 (blue).
Ferodo DS3000 isn't a bad pad but they doesn't seem to last that long as Performance Friction and Pagid.
I have tested Red Dot Competition and EBC Green Stuff. I do not recommend these, they don't last at all.

Performance friction have a reputation for chewing discs though

True, they are not the most disc friendly pad on the market. But used only track they don't chew dics like crazy. Just don't use them on the street, then you get drawbacks of heavy brake dust and not so good looking discs.
But on the other side, discs are lot cheaper than race pads. So in the end it can be cheaper to replace discs yearly and pads every third year than the other way around.
