I'm stripping my car down as it will be used as a daily driver and for the track. I'm curious as to what level you can get to with such a car and what it takes to get there.

I've seen some - albeit two doors - that have gotten down to around the 1000kg mark but I'm not too sure what level of stripping they've gotten to.

Do any of you guys know what weight your car is to give me something to aim for?

Our 320 race car is 1045kg with about 1/8 of a tank of fuel. This puts us bang on the base weight of the series (1125kg) with either Neil or I driving.

We have stripped out the whole interior apart from the dash basically, all sound deadened scrapped off etc from inside and quite a lot of insulation etc removed from inside the engine bay and under the car around the gearbox and bulkhead areas.

All non-essential wiring has been removed also. The earlier "chromie" cars are lighter than the later "facelift" cars.

There are plenty of pictures of what we stripped out here www.team156.co.uk

Mines about 980 ish with out me in it. Comes in at 1060 when weighed aftrer a race.

Two door car with fibreglass bumpers, bonnet and boot. Everything thats not needed to race has gone. ABS, heater, washers and bottle etc...

Still got underseal on it (cos I got chored off trying to remove it) so I could get a little more off.

If you strip it for the track then best to get it corner weighted to redress the balance.

cragles, M20B20 lump? small case or large case diff? (there's quide a difference)

shorty73, what lump have you got in there? Is it the M3 in your pic?

No thats a 325. Got an M3 looking front bumper. Couldn't tell you what the cage weighs but I'm sure you could find out from somewhere. Just the one seat. Not the lightest in the world but light seats cost big bucks.

Just out of interest do you think a carb set up would have any weight advantage over the exsisting manifold/tb/airfilter set up?

ime no expert but Ide assume a carb would save you weight but at the expense of power...

depends on the carbs. a set of 40 dcoe's and manifold are probably about the same weight as the manifold but you'll save on the AFM, TB, filter, hoses, icv etc etc. you will then have to fit a pressure regulator to drop the 5 bar pump down to about 3.5 psi (iirc) for the carbs.

probably a bit of weight saving to be had but mainly the gains will be power, oooh, and the noise!!!!

ITB's are the best bet these days but more costly. however bigger gains are there to be had.

What are the rules in your category? will they rule our ITB's or multiple carbs?

Our cage is a quite comprehensive one, lighter ones are available. I suppose it weighs about 65-70kg based on these weights from the net
OMP 6 point 66.2lbs (30kg)(material - T45)
Safety Devices B7 121.2lbs (55kg)(material - CDS)

Our seat was expensive, but we got a massive discount on it through the series, and it weighs only 7-8kg if I remember rightly??

The diff is whatever the standard one is?

Multiple ITB's are out but carbs are ok. Wasn't too fussed on the weight saving aspect (but anything is a bonus) as long as there is a power gain.

I should be picking up a set of 45's this month

the 320 diff should be a small case.
With some care, you could use a small case diff on a B25. i'm not sure of the weight difference but you can certainly feel it when trying to wrestle one up under the car!

Just wondering if a screaming 4 pot E30 track weapon could get close to 900kg with no cage?

Me and my bro are putting a 205 gti track plaything together (his choice as he's paying, i'd have gone for RWD) and the original heavy XU series engine and box have been binned in favour of a 16V TU series (106 gti) with about the same power but a lot less weight. the stripping has been merciless too! no dash or anything :)
Out and out grunt is not going to be as fun as a 600kg-ish go-kart of a 205 :D well that's the theory for now anyway! :D :D

that sounds like a plan then... mmmm 45's
i'd love some on my M30 but i fear the economy may be, err, poor. that's a polite way to put it! :D
