After significant interest for a performance coilover solution on here, I have approached GAZ Shocks http://www.gazshocks.co.uk to offer a discounted price on their products to the club.

I'm also pleased to announce that they will be the title sponsor next year for the Production BMW Cup http://www.pbmwc.co.uk, where a large number of the filed run these coilovers.

THE SHOCKS

The deal is for a full set of GAZ GOLD coilover shocks, front and rear including springs and rear rose jointed top mounts. These are fully hieght adjustable and one way damping adjustable, changing the bounce and rebound on the damper. You can specify you own spring rates when you order, and GAZ will be able to advise you based on the large amount they sell for the e30 cars from 318's to M3's.

I run these on my car and cant say a bad word about them, a sentiment shared by over half of the PBMW field and the series leading M3 of John Wilcocks in TTRS.

THE DEAL

The cost for the above (please not adjuatable front top mounts avaliable at extra cost) is £675 + VAT + Delivery and is based on an exchange basis of your front struts

THE EXCHANGE

The front coilovers are based on the standard front hubs, as such the sale is based on an exchange basis. GAZ have built units on the shelf so you wont be without your struts for long. In reciept of your struts and payment your new coilovers will be sent out. Old struts should be stripped down, anything left attached will not be returned.

Is there a deal on the rears seperately

Only ask, as i already have the fronts

Jimmy, it's Craig, Neil (neilbtcc's) brother. Just to add a couple of bits, I think that GAZ will accept 45mm or 51mm struts since they only use the bottom part... and the bottom of the rear struts is now offset, i think this is so that the rear coilovers clear the fuel pipes etc in the right rear arch. :D

Sure they will split, they priced the PBMW deal as individual elements so sure its not a problem

Call them and ask :)

What are people's honest thoughts on running these in a roadcar. The one I am building will start as a 90% roadcar and slowly evolve to a track day toy over a few years.
I want to have decent ride comfort, will this be acheivable with the right springs?

Also on a touring, what do I need to do to the rear shock towers for reinforcement?

I just got a set of GAZ to replace the LEDA's on the e21, better than the LEDA as front are larger strut housings, more adjustabilty and a better finnish.

Nearly temped for a e30 set for future use.

Pick the right spring rates and you'll be fine, though you may have to use spring compressors to fit them.
There's a list of spring rates HERE, closest to OE would be 14", 120 lb/in front and 16", 100 lb/in rear* but you can choose whatever suits you best from Faulkners as they supply Gaz.


*Yes, that rear spring rate is correct. This is a full coilover conversion, where the rear suspension acts on the trailing arm shock mount, not the OE spring perch. As such, it has more leverage over the wheel and doesn't need such a high spring rate. To convert other (OE perch) spring rates, divide by 2.77.
This is the square of the ratio of the distances from the pivot axis of the different spring mount points.

I have plenty of sets of E30 front struts in stock if anyone needs them to buy for the exchange to Gaz. I offered this last time round and a few people purchased them. I can send straight to Dave @ Gaz for next day delivery with all your details on.
Currently 4x sets of larger 51mm struts in stock.
These will come already stripped down so Gaz or you have no work to do.

How wide are the rear coilovers? Is the shock about the same size as the standard non-coilover or is coil + shock about the same size?
It's probably a bit wider, so that would limit the size of wheels used. Or am I thinking too extreme and will wheels hit something else first? :mad:

They clear a 195/50/15 on a 7J wheel fine

What wheels are you looking to run?

If you call Gaz they can give you exact diameters

Nothing is decided yet. It's a project car and I'm just making up the shopping list :wink:

But the rears will probably be 9 or 10 wide. There are 9's on it at the moment with KW shocks, but I can't realy remember how much clearance there is.

But I was thinking about these shocks the other day and a new 'problem' came up my mind. In my opinion a coilover is superior to a shock + coil. But doesn't that mean that all the weight of the car will be on the shocktowers if you take coilovers?
If you use shock + coil, the weight is on the frame (2 square bars if I remember correctly, so quite strong) and only the shocks are thransfered to the shocktowers.
Does that mean that you have to re-enforce the towers to use coilovers? I was planning to do that anyway, just to be on the safe side. But coilovers would mean I HAVE to do it.

Should be fine with the towers as they are, most of the PBMW cars running them dont have reinforced towers, others have th cage tying in but not anything on the top

Haven't seen one fail, and thats with lots of curb running ;)

You can always reinforce the rear top mounts as a precautionary measure with some z3 reinforced top mount plates - thats what we have done.

Bruce does them in the "group discounts" area on here.

There just waitng for a batch of rear topmounts to come in(despatched today apparently) and my rears should be sent out by the end of the week :thumb:
