Hello,
Is it possible to check on your records, what dates BMW changed different features on the E46 steering racks (non M3), and how we might decipher the codes?
From my understanding, after customer feedback they changed the 'feel' of the racks, initially heavy/weighty, to over-light. Then on counter complaints back to a more weighty rack. I've also read for a short while they offered retro fits to customers who brought new cars and didnt like the steering. Added to the fact that the codes on realOEM do not seem to tie up, it makes it a bit of a lottery when choosing which rack to use in a conversion.
Example,
A rack i have just picked up has a purple and silver id tag which reads;
7852 974 679
6 755 067
075367 0202 - im guessing this is the batch and date, probably quite important
Hope you can help
Matt

Hi Matt
we dont have any details as to why a rack was used, BMW have only used 3 RHD racks and these have been changed through date production
upto 09/98 this one now superseeds into the M sport pack
09/98-09/01
and 09/01 onwards
they also list one for the M sport package 03/01-09/01
when BMW change a part number its normaly because of a new supplier or some sort of design feature
for us retrofitting from one model to another is something we cant gaurntee we use chassis numbers if a car is in that date range we use the correct part number
sorry i cant be any more help
