Found an M50 with a dead engine in the scrapyard, so I'll have the sump etc for my M52.
Only thing is, it's sitting on essentially oily soft ground and I only have normal tools to try and get the sump off and past the crossmember.
Any ideas? Never pulled a sump, so an idiot's guide would be great if there's such a thing!
How does one pull a sump off an E34?

Assuming ths M50 sump is in an E34 yes?
Watch out for the bolts that go into the back of the sump via the bellhousing. The rest of it is just sweaty oily fun that'll last a good couple of hours if you're unlucky. Take lots of variations of 10mm sockets and extension bars, all preferably 1/4" drive.
I had to jack the engine up a good few inches to get it up enough to draw the sump out.
HTH.

Undo the bolts!! Take a jack with you so you can lift the car/engine. I would expect thet once the sump pan is lowered a little you will be able to see/feel the oil pick up and unbolt that so it drops into the sump.

Get them to lift the car with a fork lift or crane, I wouldnt even consider this job otherwise!
1/4 inch drive and a few small extensions is essential for removing the oil pickup (as daimlerman says) this will need to come off before you can slide the sump out unless you fancy dropping the subframe or lifting the engine right up (I wouldnt!)

While you are there, get yourself the Oil strainer/pick up pipe thing and the dipstick and tube remember!
If I recall correctly the gearbox has to be un-done and pulled back to allow you access to the rear most sump bolts too.. (but then I didn;t remove my sump so dont know for sure).
