Hey guys my younger brother wants to buy a car.
Hes 18 years old and has aprox a 2k budget.
We have found a e36 318ti compact. Here is the link below:
http://www.gumtree.com/london/95/20284395.html
I got a few questions which I figured you guys could answer. Here goes:
The car is obviously turbo'd but how do you know if the turbo has worn out?
Have you guys had any expieriences of these cars? What do you think of them?
What do you guys think of the deal?
I have already offered him to get an e30, but hes seen how many problems Ive had with mine and hes put off. After researching he has narrowed it down to a compact, a saxo vtr and a ford puma. Id rather something like this than any of the other ones.
Thanks guys
George

Dont think they are turbo mate.Pretty sure they use the M44 318is engine but double check that.
Price doesnt sound too bad assuming the car is all good.
Decent spec too with the half leather and wotnot.

Yes, M44 1.9 engine. T is for Compact body, not for turbo (C was reserved for Coupe).

Ive been looking into it at Parkers and the fuel delivery is through turbo injection.
I would prefer it if it wasnt as if the owner hasnt been looking after the turbo and has just been switching the car off without letting the turbo cool down could damage it. That means the turbo may need to be changed in the not too distant future, and they dont come cheap

Then Parkers is wrong (unless turbo-injection is just marketing gimmickery!).madaboutthe30 wrote:Ive been looking into it at Parkers and the fuel delivery is through turbo injection.

Ive been researching it and its definetley not turbo'd.
Its BMW being awkward again.
They messed around with the e46 aswell like that. You'd think that the 316i was a 1.6 litre where it actually is a 1.8, or the 318i was a 1.8 where it actually is a 1.9.
I dont know how they've faired up with the new 3-series.

"i heard the t was for twin cam"
Yh that makes more sense as there are a few compacts without the "t" on the model name.
"i wish they were turbo'd! i'd have had a lot more fun with mine"
Whats your opinion on the e36 compact then, would you recommend it??

Thats right, they used that abbreviation on the 2000 Ti in the 60's and 70's and with the introduction of the compact they brought back the 'TI'.I was led to beleve the TI was for touring internatonale
Most certainly not turbo.

Finally promoted to Regular! Only took 7 years...
