As a comparison
The E39 528 Touring rear axle limit when towing a trailor is 1380 kg or 1.38 tons
It's all in the owners handbook that comes with the car

A 2.5 tonne trailer/boat is going to require a proper 4x4 to tow it legally. A new 57 plate defender jobby has a 2.5 tonne limit I think.
