My friend has been offered a E28 525i for £200,

It has around 65,000 miles, and a few rust spots.

Can anyone give me advice on what to look for as we are going to view this evening.

Cheers

Rot, rot and more rot. Similar rust spots to an E30 (arches, sills, jacking points etc) but basically just check everywhere. Most tend to have knackered suspension but dampers, balljoints etc are fairly cheap on these. Rear axle bushes are prone to wear and the front spring cups are also known to corrode.

They're powered by the good old M30 and whilst never that quick (150bhp) the 525i is/was a lovely smooth old thing. Check for overheating.

Manuals are bombproof but autos need an oil and filter change every Inspection II. IIRC early autos were 3 speed with later ones 4 speed.

Okay, went to look at it last night,

Only problem was it was dark and all we had for light was a torch. hense going back today to give a last look in the daylight.

The only rust we could see was on the bumpers, it had gotten really quite bad, but could be qute easily replaced.

It will be easier to check everything in the daylight and have a look underneath, the engine seemed to sound ok and was smooth when driven.

But the seller said that the tyres were pretty sh+t because they were the wrong ones or something, so when he put hes foot down a bit round a corner it did slide out slightly. (could this be something more serious than just tyres?) If so what.

Quite right Nathan, but as you know i've got two E28's and they generally stand up to the tin worm much better than E30's.

The main places to check cosmetically are front wings above bumper corners, rear wheel arch lips, rear number plate light surrounds, around the rear lights and the boot seal gutter.

More serious areas to check are:

Jacking points
Sills
Footwells, check for damp carpets.

Mechanically they are bullet proof.

The question of tyres is probably that it has some horrible metric wheels and tyres on it, bin them and put on a set of E38 7 series BBS alloys, 8J'sx16" rims and they fit straight on, you can buy a good set on Ebay with tyres for 50-100 quid.

Good Luck, for that money you can't go far wrong.
An E30 touring, two E28 M5's and an E28 528i.
