hi guys can the tappets be adjusted on these? at the moment it sounds like a diesel when idling
its a 92-k plate m40

I used Magnatec on my old one and that seemed to make it quieter. Others though say its made their's worse! In my experience, additives don't improve things either, quite the reverse infact.
The tappets can be replaced but iirc I think you need a special tool to remove the rockers to make it a simple job. IMO its not really worth throwing money at an early 4 cylinder E36, but if you can do the work yourself...
The later M43 engine (fitted from L/M plate onwards) is so much better (chain driven camshaft and very smooth for a 4 cylinder) and they're very cheap now.
Might be worth asking in technical help as the M40 engine was used in E30's.

Quietened my M40 with new lifters and rockers,you may need a camshaft as well.The trick is to lock the crank via a hole in the rear passenger side of the block,there are two webs there and the hole is hidden by a plastic plug, use an 8mm drill.The cam has squares on the end,these sould be square to the surface of the head.You can then remove the cam,rockers and lifters and replace as nessesary.Use a new cambelt on rebuild...
