finally managed to get my compact in to the workshop its got a dodgy sounding diff etc so i need to change it

any idea what the 318ti puts out it looks like the same engine from the e30 318is

140bhp. The engine will be M42/M44.

was thinking of that i missed out on a complete 328i the other day so that may still be an option

I expect you can achieve 150'ish bhp from the current engine quite easily (bigger throttle body, rechip etc) but for serious power, as Pete says, the M52 is the way to go.

There was a Euro only 323ti (fitted with the 170bhp M52) but I expect BMW were worried it would steal coupe sales, hence not released over here.

What can't? Same as any other car really, you're restricted only by money and your own imagination.
