eratic idle on 00 320d

the car idles eraticly from normal to 1000rpm it has 150000 miles on clock is this normal on a diesel any ideas to what might be causing this greatly appreciated car is fine apart from this 136bhp model by the way

It can be AFM, but you really need code read it.
