my dads disco has the bmw td5 engine, its on a w reg, apparently it should have 5/30 oil in it, the one from gsf is said to be for ford engines, does this matter and is it the right grade anyway :?

Discoveries , unlike nasty P38 rangerovers never had the BMW 6 cylinder diesel. Being a landrover nasty leaky tractor engine i wouldn't have thought what oil you added was of great importance, it will be on your drive shortly anyway ! :eek:

Indeed, early ones up to about T reg have the four pot Dorothy Perkins motor. Later ones are 5 pot, both are 2495cc. The early ones give excellent chassis lubrication. :D

They're not a bad engine to be fair. The TD5 is a five cylinder version of the Rover L series motor which itself is a development of the old Perkins Prima which powered Maestros and Montegos. The Montego version was turbocharged and went very well with good economy and was as tough and reliable as diesels should be. This was itself was a dieselised version of the Leyland O Series 1700/2000 motor which came out in 1978 (Hmmm, Marina, Ital, Princess....).
