Oh, there's quite a few E28 pervs lurking around here. It's a classy retro car, I've learned to drive in one and have a major weakness for them.JONUK wrote:However that said IMO the E28 is the best built BMW ever.
One day when all things come together I'll get one!

Nothing wrong with a 518i. They were surprisingly brisk - not fast or even quick but not bad. An E28 doesn't weigh a lot so doesn't need much power to row it along. The M10 had decent low end torque (better than the 520i) and good gearing.

What year did the 518i become available? I may well have driven a 518 it was a while ago.
My 520i was new back in 1986 and at that time against a Sierra it looked really dated. However, now I see one and they just look great, can't say that about the jelly mold.Oh, there's quite a few E28 pervs lurking around here. 518i replaced the 518 in January 1985. I had an original BMW press car B613GRX which was doom blue with the 14 inch bottlecap alloys. At the time (around 10 years ago) I had a 1983 520i manual and I thought the 518i would be dreadful. I ended up running two or three of them and they were okay and very good on fuel.
We went from E28's to a Sierra in around 1984 when my Dad changed jobs. The Sierra was a biscuit tin but it was a pretty good car but in those days the difference in quality between a BMW and a Ford was immense. Now they are about the same and BMW's are nothing like as well made as they were.
Does the Sierra look dated? There are three Y plate examples around here, two basic 1.6L five doors and a black XR4i. The original Sierra shape still looks pretty modern to me - a five year old shape as opposed to something that came out 25 years ago. yep, They arrived here in October 1982. I recall the first time I saw one travelling up the M1 in a 520i to the 1982 NEC Motor Show and seeing a red Sierra bowling along. Man those things caused a real stir.
