Quick question peeps. Does a 2000 X Plate 318ci have a M43 engine or the later valvetronic one? When did BMW stop using the M43 in them?
Cheers!

2000X will have the M43. The Valvetronic engine is something to be avoided at all costs - that arrived in September 2001.

Cheers Andyboy. I was hoping that would be the case, the M43 in my E36 has been a superb little thing.Andyboy wrote:2000X will have the M43. The Valvetronic engine is something to be avoided at all costs - that arrived in September 2001.

I think its known for being pretty much unfixable if it does go wrong, whilst the M43 plods on forever and is simple to work on.Simon13 wrote:Why Andy? my father in law to be had a 52 plate 318i saloon with this 2.0 4 pot he had it from new until recently and clocked over 80k in it and it never missed a beat. The N42 Valvetronic is the best selling used engine from the big BMW breakers. Draw your own conclusions! And it's built in Birmingham, that engineering centre of excellence.
