Hi guys.

Im pretty sure they are both M60s, but are the E34 530i V8 and E32 730i V8 engines the same?
A mate has a 530i with a knackered engine and has found a cheap 730i, but its an auto and his 530i is manual. Will it be a straight forward engine swap, and a case of swapping flywheel/clutch etc on to the 730i engine - will the E34 manual box bolt up to the E32 engine?

Just to give him some more ideas, would there be any extra work in fitting the 4.0ltr V8 from a 540i (E34) or even E32 version?

Cheers

They are both M60 and if its from E32 will be the same....
should just be a case of all parts needed for a normal auto to manual swap
the manual gearbox will match up with engine...
and think you can drop the 4.0ltr in but the manifolds or exhaust may be diff for clearance in the 5...any v8 from E32/E34 or early E38s had M60 fitted as the later engines were M62 4.4ltr and dont think these can be swapped in earlier cars

heres link to guy that dropped 4.0ltr in..i fancy this for my own 5

I know but how much is it pushing? BHP & torque if anyone knows? Sorry I know it's cheeky on some next man's thread.

3.5 m30 is 218 from the factory, most have had a lazy life and will be nearer 200 bhp with a touch more torque.

Cheers for the reply (and everyone else  )

So the 3.0ltr and 4.0ltr V8s are M60 and the 4.4ltr is an M62?
Do the later 4.0ltr and 4.4ltr V8s have EWS or anything like that - come to think about it, I dont know if the 3.0 V8 has it (its a 93-94 530i I think).

I think my mate will probably stick with the 3.0ltr just for the ease of it, but he could be swayed I guess winkeye
I spoke to him yesterday and he has already bought the 730i (it was cheap) and is waiting for me to turn up with tools and engine hoist.

Not always.

The early 3.5 M30's had a 3453cc capacity & gave 218bhp/224lbft in all forms. From 1982 the bore was reduced from 93.4mm to 92mm & the stroke was lengthened from 84mm to 86mm to give 3430cc. Power & torque remained the same but the engine characteristics changed with the earlier engine being more "revvy".

The bigger change came in '87 when the Highline 635's appeared. Bigger valves & inlet manifold ports together with a revised exhaust manifold were introduced to compensate for a reduced compression ratio, designed to work with catalytic convertors. The nett result was 220bhp/232lbft in the 635 & 735. The newly introduced E34 had 211bhp/220lbft, probably to ensure that it wouldn't be faster than its heavier flagship models.

These later M30's were set up to run very lean & so respond well to a rechip. Claims of 11-20bhp are made.

The M30 in the E34 kicked out 211BHP, it was "detuned" to allow for unleaded fuel according to the roadtests ive got from the time..

My re mapped E34 M30 in my sport kicked out 223BHP.

Fantastic engine but torque wise you'll be ragging it to stay with a modern 2.0 turbo diesel.

My 635 runs happily on unleaded too. I think it was more of a political decision than anything. Nobody seems quite sure what was changed to reduce power.

Which chip did you get?

Compared to what? Another engine designed in the 60's or something that's had another 30 years development?

In mixed driving my 635 auto isn't that far behind my 320 auto Cab which isn't a great deal behind my 316 manual Touring.

The Baur was a thirsty bugger for 125bhp 2.0 litres - about 22mpg which is what the 635 will do given any kind of open road. I've had 28mpg out of it on a m/way at 75-80mph which ain't bad for 3.5 litres.

Unless you're doing a lot of miles then 5 or 10 mpg difference is neither here nor there.

id hate to see it running rich !

id say anything under 30mpg was poor fuel consumption.

22mpg isn't thirsty - try a Jensen Interceptor at 11mpg. Now that's thirsty.
m-dtech wrote: id say anything under 30mpg was poor fuel consumption.
Simple law of physics - 1600kg of un-aerodynamic car will not get 30mpg + if it's using 200bhp.

Yes, an E39 528 manual or similar can break the 30mpg barrier if driven gently but use the power or drive it in town & you'll be looking at the low 20's.

If you think anything under 30mpg is poor fuel consumption then you need to be on DieselZone.com.
