so can i just fit the intercooler + pipe work to get the extra poke on the TD ? or is there more to it than just that ?

There's much more to it than that 
According to TBMW you'd also need the injector pump among other parts, the pump is a specialist only job to fit and have timed up.

would i see any benifit in just fitting the intercooler to lower the charge temp ?
