Turn the engine over by hand to see if it's not seized.
Take spark plugs out and put a bit of petrol down there.
Make sure it sparks, then give it a go.

Plugs out, WD40 down the bores (plenty of it). Spin the engine over buy hand a couple of times and then do it on the starter 'til the oil light goes out. The fuel in the tank will be ruined and the car probably won't even run on it so get a length of fuel hose from the fuel pump (it's on the head) into a can of fresh petrol. By the time the oil light has gone out the pump will have fired some fresh juice into the carb float chamber - but half fill an aerosol can lid with fuel and tip it down the carb. Spray the linkages with WD40 so they work nice and smooth.
The points will need a quick rub with emery and smear some grease on the distributor cam. Now fit the plugs and fire it up! These M10's have a remote thermostat which will probably be seized by now but add some coolant anyway.
These early 316's were 1600cc and horribly undergeared - they are useless on the motorway. Should be a sweet car though and well worth saving.
What colour is he?

Buy it for £20, fill it with lots of old frag, bricks etc and tow it down the frag yard, it should fetch £80 and with the added bonus of clearing the streets of another e21 !

Whats wrong with e21's? They seem worthless going by threads like this. Any reason why? I would have thought they are becoming classics, especially in good nick.
Is the E30 headed for this drop in value?

99% of them are rusty , damp, smelly bodged up scrap. These attributes and the fact that they are slow, juicey and ugly oh and did i mention rusty means they are as desireable as bum cancer .bmwe30mtech wrote:Whats wrong with e21's? Obviously all of the above issues apply to many other mainstream 'classics', i.e MGBs, sh1tfres, minis, beetles etc which are strangely sought after and have a value (?)
The e21 is not sought after and with most e21s suffering from all of the above ailments means their only value is gauged by their weight in KG

lol, if it wasnt for the 2002 then E21 there would be NO E30 simple, E21 made bmw and company survived on the E21 sales back in 1977-1982 as they were "how would you call it, ahhh yes bmw were in the shitter at that period" so praise the E21, .. well im alright i drive an Alpina C1 and where ever i drive people just stares at my car with there jaws open and then its like " mate, you selling it.." F--K you i am !!pacerpete wrote:Buy it for £20, fill it with lots of old frag, bricks etc and tow it down the frag yard, it should fetch £80 and with the added bonus of clearing the streets of another e21 !
Obviously you dont know much about cars on the topic of older generation classic cars maybe you still seeking info about the car your driving but the 316 is NOT a sought after car but the 323i (if you can find one) is. and remeber when you start a 6 cylinder M20 block just remeber what shape of bmw it was designed for (m60 to m20) ive had 3 E30 cars and they rot badly in areas that are common, on E21`s its the sills and front chassis leg. anywhere else it would jut be surface rust..
Take care hope you sleep well at nights

No way. The E21 was a pale shadow of the 2002 - bigger, heavier and no more power. The 2002Tii has the same performance as the 323i but that was in 1971. I've had plenty of E21's and I can honestly say it's not a car I would ever want to own again. To your rust spots add the entire rear end, particularly the boot floor and rear arch housings.--alpina-- wrote:lol, if it wasnt for the 2002 then E21 there would be NO E30 simple, E21 made bmw and company survived on the E21 sales back in 1977-1982 as they were "how would you call it, ahhh yes bmw were in the shitter at that period" so praise the E21, .. well im alright i drive an Alpina C1 and where ever i drive people just stares at my car with there jaws open and then its like " mate, you selling it.." andyboy, i was an ex bmw mechanic for almost 18 years i have seen some right rust buckets, but saying that it all depends on how the owners look after their car from day one, once it starts to change hands to other owners then the car isnt looked aftered or loved like in the first place, my e21 needed new sills which is done, it also has an E12 M535i LSD which the early E21 Hartges H series cars had and all in all its rust freee... ive also had many e21`s but its down to an individual if they want to spend money to bring it to pristine condition, ive also has an E30 325i mtec1 sports in excellent dolphin grey with black recaro leathers which was a real head turner but then i gave it away as a present to a mate who then decided to kill him self init.. car looked nothing like it after....
but what can i say its one of those things init..

An E21 - suitably modded with decent suspension, an LSD and a bit more grunt is a good car. The C1 2.3 was what the standard 323i should have been because a standard 323i is shite.
As for rust it's horses for courses - both of them rot like a bean can in a salt mine.
Let's see some pics of this '77 316! My first ever BMW was a 1976 R plate 320i - Fjord blue with marine blue cloth and the M10 with K Jetronic. It was a heap of shit (rotten jacking points and a cracked head) but it looked mint. At the time I worked at my Dad's garage so I had to change the oil every week due to water slowly mixing into the oil - as the oil came out of a customer's car it went straight into the 320i!
Me? Council?
