e36 heater resistor

my heater on my e36 only works on speed four ive changed the resistor pack for a second hand one and it seems to get hot and melt the coils together? i asked on e36 coupe.com but didnt get a single reply its nowhere near as good as the zone!

was the hedgehog(resistor) the same type ?
there are a couple of variations on these dude, and they dont interchange...
what heater panel do you have ? auto-climate or rotary ?

it was like that i think it has three coils. its normal style heaters with 3 twistys!
