E36 fuel gauge not working

My friend has text me tonight saying his fuel gauge suddenly stopped working on his 323i (E36) and wants me to have a look at it tomorrow, tbh I haven't a clue where to start looking apart from the fuses and the connection to the tank.
Has anyone else ever had this problem and can advise me where or what to look at?

Hi mate under the back seat drivers side is the fuel pump and sender unit take it out and you should find a broken wire.i have done loads hope this helps
