if it had nikasil, it would of been changed, or gone very wrong by now, so i cant imagine its anything to worry about

just make sure you know where as many petrol stations are as you can

cliffy, get me the chassis number and i'll search the computers at work to see what its had, etc...

if its running a bit lump, is it just a case of a good service, ie plugs, leads and filters?? Maybe even cleaning the ICV and air glow meter

Unless it's £500 I'd give that thing a swerve. Trouble with the V8 stuff is that it's not DIY fixable. There are still loads of Nikasil engines about - Nikasil was a Nickel-silicon coating used by Porsche on virtually all their engines and BMW on their boxer twins - coating the bores of an alloy block was cheaper than sleeving with steel sleeves. Running in was crucial - if it did too many short trips using the high suphur fuel around in the nineties, the coating would flake and the engine would gradually lose compression as the rings ate into the alloy bores. Jaguar had the same problem with their V8's but Porsche didn't because by the time the high sulphur fuels arrived, the 911's and 928's were all old cars and well run in.
The M62 units used Alusil as used on the V12. Alusil is not a coating - it's an extremely hard silicon alloy used for the whole block and the pistons are coated in cast iron and fitted with softer grade rings.
Any old Nikasil V8 that idles like a disgruntled hog is on the way out. Pay a couple of hundred quids and blast about in it before it shits itself.

E34 530 V8s are pointless and sad, (at least a 540 while still fragile and sad is fast) an M30 535I is a better car in every way bar the nice V8 burble from the 530.
To summarise ,a £500 530 is a £1500 chocolate engine and £1500 margarine gearbox waiting to expire on an unfortunate victim ! :( The fact that the car runs poorly is a sure sign of council previous , zero maintenance and issues, don't do it !
On the other hand i have a very nice sterling silver 535 sport with black recaro leather, cruise, a/c and lots of other morsels that may be for sale ! :)

The lumpy running could be down to the diaphragm at the bulkhead end of the inlet manifold blown, causing inbalance inside the chamber and burning too much crankcase gas..Oil leaks from the upper timing cover gaskets to cylinder heads is common, snapped head bolts is another favourite so check out the oil on dipstick and cap aswell :!: . But for £300 notes, go on get it after checking out the above ......Good luck cliffy (not much crome on the 5 series E34's though). :D

Very little, just a smattering around the side glass. ECP chrome arch kit methinks.
