There are two types! The first one was LHD only and is called either an M318i or a 318iS Class 2. It's a 1.8 M42 engine and running gear in a four door shell with the M3 bodykit but with standard mirrors. They were a homologation special to enable BMW to race the 4 door E36 with the M42 motor (2 litre S42). They were made around 1994 and were red, Dakar yellow, white and one of the blues and had sports seats etc etc. The '98-99 ones were South African built and much the same but not all came with the M3 bumpers etc.

Late 'is' had the m-tech kit.....2 and 4 door and none of them had m3 mirrors.

Not so - the M3 bodykit was an optional extra. Most have it, but some don't.e36boy wrote:Late 'is' had the m-tech kit.....2 and 4 door and none of them had m3 mirrors.

I stand corrected. I realised after i wrote it ,i see 'is' all the time on late plates with and without m-tech kit
My mum used to have a 'is' m-tech coupe on a 'T' plate, was a lovely motor and i could definatly feel the difference in ride to my standard 316i.

That's the standard model. The M Tech kitted version has the M3 fromt and rear bumpers and the M3 flat side mouldings plus the 328i Sport type bolted x-spokes.billgatese30 wrote:yes they were, i know a nice lady (well, can be if i don't slag off the fact she owns an e36, otherwise she tells me to **** off) who owns a dark metallic blue one (not sure of the exact shade)

Really? The last two I've seen (both at auctions) had bolted BBS wheels except for the standard car which has the wheels seen on the blue one. The owners must have put them on then.......

Yeah, I only know coz my mum had one and they came with 16" 5 spoke with like a split type thing in the spokes. Andyboy you could well be right though, They might have been an option, But im more or lesss sure they wernt though. The standard 'is' without m tech goodies also had wheels which are simular to what i have on my car.Andyboy wrote:Really? I recall an article in either PBMW, Total BMW or TBMW a few years back. I might try and dig it out at some point. Made some decent ponies as i recall.
